Senior cat with liver disease: How to give meds if he hates pills?

Hello there and thank you for your post! I am not sure what medication you are trying to hide, but you could potentially have it compounded into a liquid form if that is easier. I've had clients use pieces of canned tuna to mash around the pill and that seemed to work well. I've had other clients use pieces of liverwurst to mash around the pill as well. You could also invest in a Pill Popper, which you can find in pet stores. Basically, a Pill Popper is a syringe like device that contains a hollow rubber tip which you can insert capsules or pills and safely administer them into the back of your cat's mouth. The other thing that I would suggest that works great is putting them in pill pockets which you can buy from your local pet store or online. They are very palatable so they tend to like them. You can try finding this in milk thistle, silymarin, or Vitamin E. Though none of them will actually heal the liver. They, and Denamarin, are antioxidants that can help protect the liver from further damage, but they cannot reverse damage that has already occurred.

While the Denamarin should not be given with food per se, you could give them with a bit of peanut butter or cheese just to make it more appetizing. For optimal absorption, tablets should be given on an empty stomach, at least one hour before feeding, as the presence of food decreases the absorption of S-Adenosylmethionine. For those owners who have difficulty administering tablets to their pets, Denamarin tablet(s) may be disguised in a small bite of food. Pill pocket is fine too.

Any wet or semi wet food that he likes such as liver pate, sausages, sardines and just regular wet cat food. With the syrup I would advise giving it to him directly in the mouth as it can affect the taste of the food greatly.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Buddy! The medication is likely cerenia, which is an anti-nausea medication. Unfortunately there are pills or liquid formulations of medication. Cerenia and pepcid come in injectable form. The Vet can give the first dose and maybe get the pepcid and cerenia compounded in to a liquid form. If you think you can squirt liquid medications in him then I would ask to get that form. Or consider hospitalizing for injectables. I hope this helps and i wish Buddy a speedy recovery!
