My dog threw up Denamarin. Does a missed dose affect liver treatment?

For optimal absorption, tablets should be given on an empty stomach, at least one hour before feeding, as the presence of food decreases the absorption of S-Adenosylmethionine. For those owners who have difficulty administering tablets to their pets, Denamarin tablet(s) may be disguised in a small bite of food. Pill pocket is fine too.

That is definitely pretty strange. The one thing I can think of that might cause that is related to when you are giving the Denamarin. It is meant to be given at least two hours PRIOR TO a meal to allow for best absorption. If you are giving it sooner than that or with the meal, it is more likely to prevent it from absorbing appropriately. If this isn't the case, I would recommend discussing this with your internal medicine vet to see if he has an opinion on the matter. Hope this helps.

I would talk to your vet about alternative supplements to Denamarin. This is an antioxidant supplement containing S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe) and silymarin, which can usually be found at a human pharmacy, but you need to get the dose from your vet.

Denamarin is a good choice for Dahilia. This drug speeds up liver cells healing and protects healthy cells from getting damaged. Any wide-spectrum antibiotic can be used. Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid for 2-3 weeks would be a good choice. If her blood results showed also jaundice, she should be put on ursodeoxycholic acid tablets.

It does need to be given a hour before a meal but it is ok to give it in a small piece of food (hot dog, cheese, etc); it just should not be given with a full meal. Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Unfortunately, Denamarin only comes in tablet form. You could try pill pockets, or potentially crush it and mix it with a bite of canned all-meat baby food. If that doesn't work, and you're really struggling to get the medication into him, I recommend reaching out to your vet. We understand that many cats are nearly impossible to get pills into! There are other liver support options, such as milk thistle, that can come in liquid form if you need a "plan B" option. It wouldn't be quite as good as Denamarin, but better than nothing! I would continue the Denamarrin for at least 4-6 weeks because this is how long the effects of steroids on the liver can last. I'm sorry you're having to go through this. Hopefully since his numbers are improving his mood and energy will follow. Good luck!
