Is my male dog sick? He's humping and licking my spayed female.

If Zeke is not neutered that could be part of the reason. Intact males are more likely to exhibit this behavior but it is all variable. Even if both males are neutered, it’s possible Zeke smells a female in heat (even some neutered males will react to that) and is changing his behavior towards Zen because of it. Don’t leave them together if there’s a concern for Zen to get hurt. Make sure Zeke gets extra exercise right now. The more tired he is, likely the better his behavior will be. Make sure to correct the unwanted behavior as soon as it happens. Lastly, give Zen a good bath including cleansing his ears (with a pet ear cleanser). However, if she is spayed, a bladder or vaginal infection is also possible. Signs of a bladder infection include frequent urination, blood in urine, or urinating where she shouldn't. Vaginal infections can involve redness of the vagina along with discharge. Both of these conditions can be easily ruled out by your vet with an exam, bloodwork, and a urinalysis if necessary. Hi and thanks for you post. Male dogs do not go into heat as females do. Females go into heat twice a year as part of their normal estrus cycle. Males do not. If he is not neutered, the testosterone he has pumping through his body can cause the behaviors you have described in more frequency than neutered males. That does not seem normal. It’s possible that he has irritation in the bladder, prostate or the prepuce. Since he can’t talk and tell you if there is something uncomfortable, I recommend to have him seen by his veterinarian. The doctor will likely check the prepuce, the bladder and also the prostate for any signs of abnormality or infection. If you can record the behavior, this would help as well to show the doctor. Hello. He is just being a male dog. Even after neutering, some males may still try to mount females, but in his case, he is still strongly attracted to your spayed female. If you do not plan on neutering the male, keep an eye on the male as the female can get annoyed at him & you may have a fight on your hands. If your male is still quite young, he may mature out of this behavior as his instincts are very strong right now. Just keep an eye on him. If there are no other signs, it certainly could just be behavioral. Humping is a dominance behvior in dogs, so yes, it is possibly occuring from Lucy getting too excited. However, if there are any changes to her vulva (enlarged, any discharge, etc.) or any other behavioral changes, I would certainly have your vet evaluate her just to be sure that there isn't a medical cause.
