My Yorkie has recurring respiratory infections. Which antibiotic is best?

If you think Cotton Ball is in need of an antibiotic for a infection, I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate antibiotic can be recommended. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. In regards to the test results, I would contact your vet to find out what the results were. For the cats you havestarted on doxycycline, the respiratory symptoms may not be due to a bacterial infection but rather a viral infection, in which case, an antibiotic won't treat if it is purely a viral infection. Sure it will treat secondary bacterial infections that may be going on as a result of the primary viral but I wouldn't rely on an antibiotic solely to treat this. I recommend using lysine supplementation. Many times in kittens, they pick up the herpes virus from the mother. Lysine works by lessening the severity and possibly shortening the duration of a herpes viral infection. Duralactin with Lysine is the supplement I recommend to help treat the infection which can be found online. If the infection worsens, a nebulizer may help and sometimes antibiotics are nebulized in severe cases. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. This may be a combination of pulmonary edema caused by her heart condition and the respiratory infection. It is quite possible that the antibiotic worked, however she may need to be reassessed for her heart medication and/or the diuretic (Salix). I suggest you take Tater-Tot back to your vet for a recheck to make sure the respiratory infection has resolved and for a reassessment of her heart disease therapy.

Hello. It often takes a bit of time for some infections to clear, but if you are concerned, please have her rechecked as soon as possible. This may be an indication that a new, or another antibiotic needs to be added to her treatment. Another option is to have her re-evaluated at a referral clinic, one that has multiple specialists. Sometimes, it takes a fresh pair of eyes to diagnose a difficult problem. Do not wait to see what happens since she is obviously worse. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Beast. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian as the respiratory tract infection does not seem to be resolving. It seems as though it has now been spread to your other dog as well. I would ask about the possibility of using a different antibiotic as doxycycline can damage the teeth in young puppies. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Azithromycin is an antibiotic. We commonly prescribe it for upper respiratory infections or infectious coughs. I have used it to speed up the regression of viral papillomas. The medication is once daily and should be given with food. I would give her no more than 0.50 mls once daily. I hope this helps!

The recommended dose of doxycycline for Lyme disease is 20mg/lb once daily, so Joey should be taking around 200mg a day. Rarely doxycycline is used at higher doses or more frequently than once every 24hrs.
