Yorkie mix yelps in pain, not eating after bite. Should I see a vet?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lexi. I do recommend that she sees an emergency veterinarian today. It sound like the issue has gone for a while without resolution. Her behavior suggests that she is painful. The veterinarian will examine her and may recommend x-rays of the affected area. Based on tese results, treatment can be started to help her feel better. She could be experiencing back pain as this is common in her breed. A soft tissue injury is also possible as is joint pain. In the meantime, do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

Ideally, I would take him on in. If he is painful enough that he's trying to bite you, getting him in sooner rather than later will get him some relief. If he is still eating and drinking, and he's able to walk comfortably, its reasonable to wait a few days and see if it gets better, and I understand holding off it that makes more sense in your situation, but if its not a financial strain or logistically really difficult, I would go ahead a take him in rather than waiting. Dog bites cause a lot of bruising and often they become infected. With your dog’s age I recommend veterinary treatment right away. Since she’s not eating much she may be developing a fever or be bruised and painful. Again dog bites can be very serious so I do recommend you take her for an exam and treatment soon. Poor Princess does sound like something is off! Lethargy and anorexia are both very general signs of illness, and can be caused by things like systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury. I see that she isn't spayed, and a major concern for is pyometra. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. Because I can't see her in person to rule out a pyo, I would take her into a vet now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.

I don’t recommend starting any medications without first consulting your veterinarian. Treating your pet at home without having seen your vet first could mask symptoms that could lead to a quicker diagnosis should it become necessary for your pet to be examined. Arbitrary administration of antibiotics without knowing if it is appropriate for the condition is what creates antibiotic-resistant organisms. Absolutely DO NOT give your dog Tylenol, or any other human analgesic or NSAID. At best, they cause gastric bleeding, at worst they are toxic to liver and kidneys. Consult your veterinarian before giving your dog medications of any kind.

I'm sorry to hear that Penelope is so painful! It seems most likely that she caused some degree of back injury or intervertebral disc disease while you were out of the house today. Penelope's panting, lethargy, abnormal gait and refusal to eat or go outside are all signs of pain. It sounds as though she needs to be examined by a vet now. Be sure to mention to the ER or on call vet that aspirin was already given, since there are many pain medications that will interact poorly with aspirin and cause additional problems. I definitely would not give Sawyer aspirin. Aspirin at certain dosages are toxic to dogs and it can also upset the stomach more then what his stomach is now. The vomit looks like foam and possibly food. It is hard to say definitively without actually being there to look at the vomit. If we still have no appetite and vomiting I recommend going to a veterinarian. Here they can make sure there is no obstruction, no pancreatitis, provide fluid support and give medication that can stop the vomiting and make Sawyer feel much better.
