My Pomeranian is throwing up and won't eat. Should I give aspirin?

Poor Blue! Small breed young puppies are delicate and they are extremely prone to low blood sugar if they don’t eat well. This condition can be fatal. There are many causes for vomiting including worms, change in diet, bacteria over growth and Parvo. I recommend to have Blue seen today by his veterinarian. It’s very important to get these little puppies eating and not vomiting to avoid low blood sugar. The doctor will need to run some tests to determine the cause. Offer him boiled white meat chicken and boiled white rice. This is a bland diet which can help to settle his stomach. Smaller, more frequent meals are better than two large ones. Sorry to hear that Jack isn't acting like himself. Baby aspirin over the course of few days, while not the most preferably of pain relievers in dogs, is not likely to cause significant ailments. Inappetence and vomiting however are some of the side effects caused by the drug, however, and might be to blame in this instance. They can cause gastric ulceration, though this usually occurs in larger quantities or with overdose. If he hasn't been drinking his water for just tonight, I wouldn't begin to panic just yet. If he continues not to drink for another 12 hours and/or vomits with greater strength or frequency, get him into a veterinarian for a diagnostic work up and/or treatment plan to get him feeling better. Be sure you tell your vet the exact point of time he last received an aspirin so that he knows if it is safe to prescribe other types of anti-inflammatory drugs without the risk of cross-reactivity. If Jack struggles with arthritis, he may benefit from having an anti-inflammatory available to him on days when he struggles the most - this would be a discussion for you and your vet to have. I would also encourage you to consider starting him on a supplement that contains fatty acids and glucosamine chondroitin. Hope this makes sense.

Sorry to hear about poor Kolby. I'm actually quite worried about him, because the lack of appetite and history of giving aspirin could indicate that something is very wrong. While aspirin can be safely given at certain doses, it is not a medication that is advised long-term and could cause him to get ulcers in his stomach or intestine. I don't completely understand the last sentence, but it appears there may be a concern with the vet. I hope that you can find a vet to look Kolby, because he could get much worse without professional treatment. For now, stop the aspirin and make sure he has plenty of water. The all meat diet will cause the gas, but if that's all he'll eat, then it's OK to feed a little throughout the day. I hope that helps and Kolby gets better soon.

I'm sorry to hear Maggie is vomiting. That is on the higher end of the dose range that dogs can tolerate for aspirin, and one of the known side effects to it can be GI upsets and ulcers. Her vomiting could also be unrelated to the aspirin and due to another underlying issue. I would recommend she be evaluated by her regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for her vomiting, have any necessary testing done (X-rays) and get started on any treatment (anti-nausea medication, antacid, bland diet, GI protectant) that may be needed. Vomiting and inappetence can occur from many conditions such as foreign body ingestion and obstruction, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. I am concerned that he could be showing signs of an obstruction which is something that requires therapy which sometimes includes surgery. I recommend that you have Jager evaluated by a veterinarian at this point for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start him on medications to make him feel better. First of all, NEVER give a dog any human medications unless directed by a veterinarian. Aspirin is extremely irritation to the stomach and will cause gastric bleeding very easily in dogs. If the weather has gotten very cold where you are, this could be affecting his attitude. The change in food may have put him a little off balance even though he's not showing any apparent symptoms. I recommend getting him in to see your vet, just to make sure there isn't something underlying that is causing him to be lethargic and subdued. If it's enough of a change to concern you, it's worth getting your vet to check just to be on the safe side.
