Why does my dog yelp, avoid stairs, and seem depressed? Is it his hip?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 11 months old

I have a 6 year old small staffy cross called Ben and I think he is in pain. He doesn't want to go up or down the stairs. He's eaten but yelped when I stroked his side so I examined him and I think it's his left hip. He's very quiet and seems fairly depressed

Poor Ben! E definitely sounds like he could be in pain. Being this painful, it sounds like he needs to be seen. Your vet will able to localize the pain and doing X-rays if needed. They will be able to get him in meds to relieve the pain. I do not recommend giving any humans pain meds as most of them are toxic to dogs. I hope this helps!
