My retriever yelps jumping and whimpers standing. What's causing pain?

Sorry to here that Kemo is having some troubles. There are many things that can cause pain in dogs. Some of them include trauma, degenerative diseases, inflammatory conditions, spinal issues, cancers, clotting disorders, and some others that are less common. In a small breed dog of about six years, my top two differentials would be some sort of traumatic event (that could have happened when you were not around) or an issue with the back. Many times when dogs are lifted and they yelp, it is a spinal problem causing some pretty severe discomfort. If you have ever had back pain yourself, you know just how uncomfortable this can be. Based on the severity and progression of the problems, I would say that Kemo definitely needs a visit to the vet sometime soon. They will be able to perform a thorough physical, and based on the findings, determine if x-rays are warranted. They will be able to target what part of the body requires x-rays. There are many medications available to treat inflammatory conditions and trauma, as well as pain associated with the back and spine. I hope you are able to work through things with your vet to resolve Kemo's pain.

He could have also strained a ligament. I would take Kalu into the vet to diagnose what is causing the pain. In the meantime, I would not allow him to jump on the bed because it's painful, and I would restrict his activity until you know what is wrong. Don't let him run around, and leash walk him to toilet. You don't want to exacerbate an injury that is already present. Your vet can also prescribe pain meds to help make him more comfortable.

You're right that trauma could cause this, however it is important to localize where the trauma is. A vet can do this by doing an orthopedic exam, which basically manipulates all the joints and bones to see if there is any disease. His pain can also be due to back issues, which would need X-rays to diagnose, or even arthritis. It is also important to rule out infectious (bacterial) causes of pain or any other underlying disease that Buddy may have. To keep him comfortable before he is seen by a vet, you can try to limit Buddy's activity - minimize his using the stairs, walking/running, and playing. I hope this is helpful!

Poor Rex! It sounds like he is quite sore. If he doesn't want to stand, and is whining and crying, then he needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible. He'll need to be examined as he may have a fracture in the leg which is why he is in so much pain, or could have damages nerves in the leg. Once the vet has isolated where the pain is coming from then they may want to do X-rays in order to figure out exactly why Rex is so sore.

It could be her back or hips were painful when she got up, and that's why she squealed, but the pain stopped when she started moving around. I would keep an eye on her for now, and if she continues squealing when she gets up, I would have her checked out by a vet.
