Why is my dog's back leg hurting and he's struggling with stairs?

Poor Ben! E definitely sounds like he could be in pain. Being this painful, it sounds like he needs to be seen. Your vet will able to localize the pain and doing X-rays if needed. They will be able to get him in meds to relieve the pain. I do not recommend giving any humans pain meds as most of them are toxic to dogs. I hope this helps!

Poor Zuko! It could be he has a problem with his hips, spine, or ligaments in his back legs causing him difficulty getting up . He's showing you he's in pain with this behavior, and this needs to be checked out by a vet. I'd take him into a vet on Monday. The vet can prescribe pain medication as needed. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I hope this helps!

I'm sorry to hear that Axel has been having so much trouble with his hind legs lately. Stumbling and falling can occur as a result of worsening arthritis issues or neurologic deficits. Stumbling and difficulty standing up can be signs of pain, even though he is still eating and not crying out. It sounds as though it is worth taking a trip to the vet to evaluate Axel's neurologic status, as well as to discuss additional options for pain management. X-rays may be beneficial to track any changes in his arthritis, but you can also ask your vet if it is possible to try treating conservatively with medications for a period of time first. In addition, fish oil supplements can be helpful to decrease inflammation in joints for the long term. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry to hear about Jagger. This could be a few different things but I am particularly concerned about a back injury. (Other soft tissue and arthritis conditions are possible too.) Though it's probably not a true emergency, I would get him in to the vet as soon as possible for an evaluation and for some safe pain medication. I do NOT recommend any over the counter pain medications as they are neither safe, nor very effective in dogs. (Plus, some will interfere with the medication your vet will want to prescribe.). For now, keep Jagger kenneled or closely supervised and no running, jumping, wrestling, or stairs until you get him evaluated. If any more concerning signs arise (loss of appetite, tremors, seizures, dragging a back leg/legs, etc), head to the emergency vet immediately. Best wishes to you and Jagger.

Poor guy. It sounds like he has some joint and possible hip problems. I would definitely recommend getting DJ examined by your vet and consider having x-rays done of his limbs to get more information on what is happening internally. Pets this young can have an array of problems including patellar luxation, muscular disease (i.e. Myasthenia gravis) or degenerative joint disease. We should be able to narrow things down after some viable diagnostic testing. I hope that DJ's debilitating condition improves soon! Best of luck moving forward. Take care. : )

I am very sorry to hear that Jake seems less eager to jump then he used to be. This is a very common problem with older small- medium dogs. Though it is difficulty to say exactly what is the cause, I would be worried about osteoarthritis in Jake's hip joints. A vet would be able to diagnose with a physical examination as well as potentially using an X-ray to visualise the changes in Jake's lower back, Such as slipped discs, knees, and hip joints. Because Jake seems otherwise very well in himself I would advise adding a supplement to his diet to help with joint health. There are several of these on the market currently. Look for Glucosamine & Chondroitin in the labels, and always buy a pet formulated brand, as doses are different for humans. I would also advise a change in his exercise regime to promote lean muscle mass development. Muscle wastage is a common contributing factor in older dogs. More frequent, but shorter walks will benefit Jake. For example, two 20 minute walks, One in the morning and one in the evening If you notice that Jake is particularly sore after a walk you can apply a cool compress to hip area I hope this answer was helpful and if you believe that Jake is not benefiting from these tactics I advise a trip to the veterinarian to ensure noting more is occuing.

If it just started you can let him rest for a few days with minimal walking and minimal physical exercise, if it does not improve within 3-4 days you will have to take him to the vet in order to get it checked and treated, he might need pain killers for a few days. if the vet think it's something more serious such as a fracture, joint injury or foreign body, he might recommend to have an xray done as well.
