My dog woke up with yellow eye gunk. What's wrong and what to do?

Hi, I can see the yellowish discharge in the right eye. In cases of eyes I would always play it safe and recommend to have it checked by a vet properly stain the eye to ensure cornea is intact and no foreign body etc. Since the dog is active , drinking , eating etc and not scratching/rubbing or bothered by the eye it is not urgent but I would schedule an appointment with the vet when they are open after the new year. Monitor she is not scratching the eye as even one movement can scratch and self traumatize the eye, so if start bothering her and she is scratching take her to the vet sooner as she will need an E collar.

Poor pup! Recurring yellowish discharge is a common sign of an eye infection, or an injury to the eye such as a corneal scratch or ulcer. He will need prescription eye ointment from your veterinarian to treat this problem, so I would recommend taking him in for an exam as soon as you are able to.

I agree that Luna Belle may be starting to brew an infection. Continue to keep the area clean and make sure she does not rub at it since this could make it worse. If she continues to have the discharge beyond 48hrs, if it starts getting worse or if it seems like it bothers her, have her examined by the veterinarian who will likely prescribe medication. This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions.
