My dog has a lump and a hole. What was that black egg-like thing?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 60 lbs

Hello so today I noticed a lump on my dog which I first thought was a scab but after cleaning it up I realised there was a hole in my dog with a big type of black egg in. I removed it as it was near the suface do you have any idea what this could be please?

It would help if you could upload a photo of the hole. Now, that you have removed the foreign body (egg) from your dog, the wound should heal. As long as there is no infection, purulent discharge or pain, you can just wait until it heals. If the hole does not heal within a few days, you may want to have the vet examine it. This may have been a pupa of a warble-type fly , although I do not know of any warble flies in the UK attacking dogs.
