Dog not peeing after TPLO surgery? Swelling & bruising normal?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Not being able to posture to urinate or wak is an issue. A dog should not go more than 18-24 hours without urinating as that can result in severe discomfort and even metabolic imbalances. This requires a visit to a veterinarian as soon as possible so that they can consider passing a urinary catheter and possibly recommending other pain control medications as it is not normal or expected to not be able to walk to urinate at this point. I'm wondering if sling walking or propping him up using towels might be an option depending on the type of surgery that he had - if he's able to posture in a semi-normal position he might be more willing to urinate. A photo may be helpful; is the swelling under the suture line? If he is acting totally normal and the sutures look good, and he is not painful when you press on the swelling, and you don't see any discharge/he isn't licking at it, etc, then I don't think its urgent, however I would recommend that you have him evaluate by your vet sometime in the next few days. Please contact your vets office to discuss her progress as without a full history of all of her injuries and wounds, how much she ate or drank when she was in the clinic and how well she had been toileting before she went home it is impossible to guess whether this is expected or if it is a set back from how well she had been doing. Tehy may need to adjust her pain medications, or assist her either with enemas or manual expression of the bladder which would require an extended hospital stay until she is more stable or they may be able to demnostrate some handling and exercises to help support her balance and encourage her to toilet normally

The incision looks normal. Her behavior is not. I recommend a recheck exam. She could be painful or could have a urinary infection. If the doxycycline is causing a stomach upset they may be able to switch antibiotics. They can put her on pain medication also to make her more comfortable. I recommend feeding wet food with added water in it so she doesn't get dehydrated. Again most dogs are back to normal in a day or two after the surgery so please bring her in for a recheck to make sure there is no complication. I'm so sorry to hear Sasha got into an accident. Most likely she isn't urinating due to the pain/discomfort in her leg and the difficulty in getting in "position" with the splint. If she isn't on any pain medications, I would recommend contacting her veterinarian to discuss what pain control options she may have. Depending on which leg it is, you can also use a towel as a sling underneath her to help support her weight and allow her to urinate. There is the possibility depending on the location/extent of her injuries that the nerves that control her bladder were damaged in the accident or the bladder itself damaged. If she continues to not be able to urinate, she would need to be evaluated to ensure her bladder is intact and her nerve control is nornal. Good luck!

He should be rechecked by your vet or at the local veterinary ER today. He may be painful or still feeling the aftereffects of general anesthesia. This can last as long as 72 hours. If his bladder is full, the doctors can insert a urinary catheter if necessary to empty it. Medications can be administered or dispensed to alleviate pain which may make him comfortable. Supportive care can also be administered. SQ fluids may rehydrate him and perk him up.
