Why is my dog suddenly wobbling, having accidents, and not eating?

Poor Lucy! This could be a few different things. The most common things would be geriatric vestibular disease, an inner ear infection, a cerebral vascular accident (stroke), or a brain tumor. A lot of times it is geriatric vestibular disease which is a disorder they get when they get older that causes imbalance, but it improves with time. Unfortunately, they usually need supportive care to prevent dehydration. If she were mine, I would take her to your vet for an exam. Your vet may want to run some blood work to ensure her organs look okay and there is no toxins involved. Your vet will likely recommend supportive care and possibly antibiotics or steroids to cover all the possible problems. They may want to keep her there to watch her closely. Poor Milo! He sounds quite ill at the moment, and his symptoms could be caused by a severe GI illness, liver disease, eating something rotten, a foreign body, kidney failure, or even cancer. It's best given his old age and his symptoms that he is seen by a vet as soon as possible for a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, urinalysis, and x-rays. These tests can help the vet diagnose what is causing his symptoms so treatment can be discussed and started.

It is possible this is an arthritis flare up or some other painful event (spinal stroke, Embolism, slipped disk, or other). It is also possible he is recovering from a seizure- which can result in abnormal Behavior for up to a day. There are also neurological diseases and infectious diseases that can cause weakness and odd behavior. Take Casper to your local vet who can likely help narrow down the problem with a good physical and neurological exam and can prescribe pain medication if needed.

I am so sorry to hear of these concerns for Nypsy. Changes in behavior such as increased anxiety and inappropriate eating can be an indication of a neurological issue. These types of conditions would require bloodwork with your veterinarian to diagnose. Dental disease is also very common in older, small breed dogs. It can contribute to changes in food intake due to oral pain. I would recommend tempting Nypsy with some tasty treats such as boiled chicken or a little canned dog food. Also do not offer her any more sweet tea-sugar is not good for our pets and if Nypsy is suffering from some sort of metabolic issue it could make things worse. When you are able I would recommend taking Nypsy to your regular Vet for a thorough physical exam and possibly some bloodwork to rule out anything significant.

Aww, I’m sorry to hear about Daisy! I see this commonly with either pain or anxiety. These little guys can easily injure their backs and legs which can cause changes in behavior and the way they stand- as well as shaking. You may also notice Daisy avoiding the dog door or refusing to jump on beds/couches as she normally does. I recommend taking her in for a good physical exam to see if this might be the case. One common cause for these types of sudden neurological symptoms in older dogs is vestibular disease, which can be caused by an inner ear infection, a brain tumor, or idiopathic (no underlying cause found). Idiopathic vestibular disease is the most common one we see and typically can improve on its own within a few weeks time with supportive care through your vet.
