Why is my old dog suddenly whining, not moving, and won't eat?

I would recommend that Blaiser be examined by a vet. The symptoms you have mentioned could certainly be behavioral (sudden accidents in the house, only eating when you are near), but the wobbly appearance could indicate an internal medical illness, cancer, or neurologic disease. After a thorough physical exam, the vet may perform a neurologic exam to pick up on any subtle neurologic deficiencies. The vet may also recommend bloodwork to look for anemia, infection, liver or kidney disease, or electrolyte imbalances, all of which could cause symptoms such as you have described.

Poor girl. I am not sure if this strictly behavioral due to old age and a bit of senility or if she has an underlying issue. It would be worth while getting her examined by your vet to have a health profile done via bloodwork to ensure everything is normal, especially since this behavior is happening in consecutive days. If she is having senility issues, then that can be addressed with medication (i.e. Reconcile) or with a prescription diet (ie Hill’s B/D). Another possible cause for sudden whimpering in older pets is arthritis. This can be helped with joint supplements (ie Dasuquin, Cosequin, Rejuvenate) in mild cases or prescription pain control medication (ie Rimadyl, Galliprant) through your vet in more moderate to severe cases. Poor guy. He certainly sounds like he may either be in pain or has some underyling neurological disorder going on here. Your vet should know where to start looking once a complete physical examination is done, because much more information can be gathered here. They will certainly want to start with some baseline bloodwork and possibly some x-rays if he seems to have any musculoskeletal issues as well. Some possible causes for these symptoms would be an underlying neurological disorder (i.e. IVDD), Addison's disease (disease of the adrenal gland), a toxin ingestion, or just pain from something internal. The behavior changes you describe could be a sign of pain somewhere or a number of other problems - sometimes it’s difficult to say what might be wrong when signs are relatively vague. Abnormal behavior and whining does not necessarily sound like an urgent problem to me unless he is showing other signs of illness as well. If you are very concerned or if Herbie has had other symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, coughing or a change in urination you could see if you can move up your appointment with your vet.

I'm concerned that Charlie is very unwell, and I highly recommend taking him in to a vet immediately, or getting a housecall vet to your home. Do not let your children be rough with him, as it may worsen his condition, and also is not safe for the children, as Charlie may feel forced to defend himself and accidentally injure them. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gage! I would worry that Gage has hurt his back or neck. This is how they tend to act. They also don’t jump up in furniture like normal and avoid the stairs. They cry when touched, picked up or move. I would take him in to your vet today before the holiday for an exam. I treat neck and back pain with anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants and pain medications. I wish Gage a speedy recovery!

I am sorry Major is not doing well. With an older patient a wide range of possibilities could cause this behavior like infection, brain lesion, vascular even (stroke) and even trauma to the spinal cord. I would recommend taking him to the vet as soon as possible for evaluation to see if there is anything you can do to help Major. I hope he improves
