Why is my dog snoring so much? Is it allergies or something serious?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Jackie. Many states right now are experiencing outbreaks of respiratory problems in dogs. All of us in the profession are always worried about canine flu outbreaks. I would advise that if the condition worsens or doesn't resolve, have your veterinarian evaluate Jackie. There are many causes of coughing and having a thorough history would help narrow that down. Of course kennel cough, allergies, things in the air that are irritants, etc are all possible including many others. Again, with everything going on now across the United States, I would advise a trip to your vet's office with her. They can evaluate her and then advise some treatment or diagnostic testing to screen for a cause. They may advise fecal tests, blood tests, x-rays, or other tests to determine a cause. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the wheezing noise is new then I would have Cherry examined. It could be a upper respiratory infection or kennel cough. If Cherry is overweight then that can affect the loudness of her breathing as well. If this has been going on for a while, Cherry could have an overlong soft palate or everted saccules that just vibrate when she is sleeping and snoring. I would take a video to show your Vet if you take her in. I hope this helps and I wish Cherry a speedy recovery!

Some breeds are more prone to snoring when they sleep due to the shape of their heads, but it could also be due to the position Woogie is sleeping in at night. If she is overweight, that can be causing her to snore, or a health issue such as an abscessed tooth that has made it's way into the nasal passages can cause snoring. If Woogie has always snored, then she likely doesn't need a vet visit, but if this is something that she has suddenly started doing, then I would have her seen by a vet for a health check.

Your dog may have an elongated soft palate that causes an intermittent obstruction of air flow. Usually it is self limiting and doesn’t cause issues but if this is happening consistently there is a surgery that can be performed to help open up the airway. I would recommend talking to your vet about the issue and having them perform an oral exam. They may recommend surgery. I hope this helps. It could be any of those things you mentioned as well as any number of other things. Without seeing him or examining him myself it is difficult to say. It is best to video him snoring and then take him to a vet for an exam. They will be able to advise you better after examining him and looking at the video.

There are several things that could cause increased respiratory noises that you are describing. Bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma are all possibilities but her weight could contribute as well. I would focus on weight loss and bring her in for an exam . Chest adiogralhs and a good physical exam would be very helpful to diagnose

I think it is more likely to be due to something else like a concurrent upper respiratory infection.
