My dog is weak, can't stand, eat, or swallow. Could it be a bee sting?

Hi there. Bee stings can be serious if the dog happens to be allergic, just like in people - but the vast majority of the time, they don't cause any major problems at all :) Many dogs like to catch bees and swallow them, and I very rarely see any significant issues related to this. If Dutch is acting normal, there should be no cause for concern. Signs of a possible allergic reaction would include facial swelling, difficulty breathing, vomiting, or weakness or collapse. If you see any of these signs, then I would take him to a veterinarian right away. Otherwise, you can just monitor him for the next few hours to make sure everything is okay.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I do think that she should see a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. She may be having an allergic reaction to the sting. Also, this appears to be causing her pain which may be why she is not eating. It is hard to know without an examination but this is certainly concerning. They would be able to examine her and determine what would be best to treat her with. Good luck and have a good night!

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The bee can sting the mouth or the throat. It will not sting once it has been swallowed. If Bertie just ate a bee you should monitor him for signs of facial swelling and breathing problems. If you notice that his respiration becomes fast, loud and raspy, you should take him to your local vets as an emergency.

I am sorry to hear Madison is not feeling well. Insect stings can cause anaphylaxis just like in people. It is a good sign the facial swelling is going down and you can administer an over the counter antihistamine. However, if the vomiting does not stop I would recommend taking her to a vet for medications to stop the vomiting. I would be concerned that she might become dehydrated. Also, you can feed a bland diet to help her rest her stomach.

Oh my, that is quite swollen, and I'd be concerned that this swelling could increase and affect her breathing. This is a medical emergency and cannot be treated at home. If the swelling does not resolve with the Benadryl, I would recommend having Pepper examined by a veterinarian for further treatment. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Depending on the severity of the reaction to the bite or sting, your dog may require some measure of veterinary care. This could include something like a steroid shot to reduce inflammation, IV fluids to help provide supportive care, or an antivenom to combat the bite of a potentially harmful snake. A vet will also be able to assess any sort of bodily harm and/or organ damage that may have been inflicted by another animal / insect. I would recommend bringing Jojo in to a vet as soon as possible. In the event this is a snake bite, these matters can sometimes be time-sensitive.
