My dog has watery stool after eating trash. Should I wait or act?

Prescous' diarrhea is probably due to eating something that did not agree with her (trash)and this likely caused colitis, The problem here is that her stool is bloody and because of that would require a course of antibiotics to prevent the bacteria that live in the digestive tract to enter the blood stream. I would fast her for 12 hours and then put her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to her regular food slowly over a few days. She should also be seen by your vet, preferably tomorrow for an exam and a prescription of antibiotics.

Other gastrointestinal signs like vomiting or diarrhoea are expected and more signs may show up. I would monitor him closely for the next 24hours and if you notice any sign or if the ones she is showing now are persisting, a check up would be required.

Not necessarily--most dogs do just fine with occasional forays into the trash! Watch for excessive vomiting that lasts longer than 1-2 hours, and be advised that Lucy might develop diarrhea at any time as well. As long as she is bright, alert, eating, and acting like her normal self there is probably no need to take her to the clinic.

If she is bright and alert and willing to eat i recommend feeding small, bland low fat meals and offering pedialyte and also fresh water to reduce the risk of developing dehydration. If she is restless and reluctant to eat she should be assessed by a vet. Obstructions, impactions and pancreatitis are all relatively common after breaking into the treat jar!

If he is acting normal then you can withhold food for 12 hours and then offer him a small amount of a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice, and see how he does with that. You could also add a probiotic to his food. If the diarrhea continues, he starts vomiting, and/or becomes lethargic then he needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. He could have an infection, parasite, colitis, HGE, etc. and your vet can run lab-work to help diagnose and treat. Hope he feels better soon!

This is not uncommon following new and rich foods and generally will settle down within 3-5days. A probiotic/fiber supplement such as fortiflora alongside a bland diet may help rebalance the gut and monitor closely for any persistent vomiting which may indicate the need for a vet visit and additional treatment

As long as Isabelle is behaving normally, you can watch her at home. Consider a 24 hour fast, allowing small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food and gradually increase the amount if no other symptoms develop. Feed bland until the stool is normal then transition slowly to her regular diet. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. if any of these symptoms develop, have Isabelle physically examined by your vet.
