Why is my dog walking with rear forward after grooming? Is it serious?

A lot of dogs feel "ashamed" after a radical hair cut. It also feels so different , and probably smells different and they do not understand what happened. So that is likely one reason why he is irritated. As for him looking back at his bum....unfortunately many groomers offer the service of "emptying anal glands", but do not do this properly, so often the anal glands would be irritated at best, or bruised at worst. It is possible that they are hurting. If this does not go away by tomorrow, I suggest you have them checked by your vet to make sure they were not damaged in the process.

Hello. The next step here is to rule out allergies, which would definitely explain all of Bella's behaviors. It is not unusual for dogs to experience peri-rectal irritation & inflammation during an allergic flare-up. Talk to your veterinarian about a trial of one of the terrific antiallergy medications ( Apoquel or Cytopoint ). It is difficult to tell from your question whether you requested Bogey's anal glands to be expressed or not. Scooting the bottom is a fairly typical sign of anal gland irritation. If Bogey DID have his anal glands expressed I would anticipate the scooting will resolve in the next day or so. If he did NOT have his anal glands expressed then this is something that likely needs to be addressed. Clipping and shampoo could also cause irritation around the hind end, and should pass within a couple of days.

Hi there and thanks for posting. Certain shampoos or sprays may irritate the skin and anus especially if she has a history of sensitive skin. Sometimes the groomers will express the anal glands as part of their grooming routine. If that was the case, sometimes there can be a small amount of inflammation afterwards especially if the anal sacs were very full. She may also have a skin infection or infection of the anal sacs as well which may be unrelated to the grooming. Poor pup! It sounds like he may have some irritation in this area. This can sometimes happen due to skin irritation from the clippers (if his rear end was shaved), a local allergic reaction to the shampoo or other grooming products, or possibly even an anal gland problem since this often causes dogs to act this way. I would recommend getting a topical hydrocortisone spray or ointment labeled for dogs (you can get this at Walmart or most pet stores) and apply to the area to help soothe it. You can also get him a plastic e-collar if needed to keep him from continuing to lick the area and make it more irritated. If he's still acting uncomfortable after 24 hours, I would recommend having him seen by a vet to determine the problem and get him prescription medication to relieve the discomfort.

This can be an allergic reaction to something she encountered in her walk or even the result of insect bites or stings. I would recommend bathing her with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula. This position can be a sign of a stomach ache or abdominal pain. This can be from many things including constipation, an intestinal blockage, stomach ulcer etc. please monitor if she’s eating, drinking, peeing and pooping normally. If not then please bring her in for an exam. They will check her over to see if they can find the reason for these symptoms, and may recommend abdominal X-rays and lab tests.
