My dog is still scooting after treatment. Could it be allergies?

This sounds like her anal sacs are fully and causing the scooting and itching. Even if they look normal on the outside they can be full inside. I recommend your veterinarian express the fluid in the anal sacs and they can see if they are over full or infected. The scooting can cause skin irritation. You can apply a thin coat of Vaseline to soothe the red skin. Yes allergies can cause itching but I would check the anal glands to make sure they are not the problem. Also make sure you are using warm water or something mild to clean the area after pooping. Some chemicals, soaps, and fragrances could cause a skin irritation and itching. This is something that if confirmed, it may be treated with steroids and anti-histamine medications. I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. It sounds like you have done a good job trying to figure this out. If her anal glands have consistently been found not to be full, then that’s a sign that the supplement is doing its job. My only thoughts are making sure that the food trial is done with a hydrolyzed protein diet such as Ultamino because it will diagnose all types of food allergy that a novel protein food may miss. You may also have a trial of a drug like Cytopoint or Apoquel to see if that stops the itching. An antihistamine may also be useful. An omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs may help as well with inflammation. I hope this gives you a few more ideas and that one of them works. Best of luck!

Sounds like Jack has skin allergies or what we refer to as atopy in dogs. As far as the licking and scooting, he may have an anal sac infection or inflammation. You need to have your veterinarian check his anal glands and discuss referral to a veterinary dermatologist for intradermal skin testing. The skin test determines exactly what Jack is allergic to and allows your veterinarian to formulate a vaccine that can treat him long term,. The goal here is to prevent chronic or recurring skin infections.

It appears from the pictures that hollys rectum is very red! It is possible she is having a recurring anal gland infection and needs oral antibiotics. Also she could be having allergies from the environment or fleas making her itchy. I recommend applying flea prevention and taking her back to a veterinarian. It might be time for a second opinion from a different veterinarian to be a little more aggressive with treatment plan.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Bella! Causes for scooting/dragging bottom are: full/impacted or infected anal glands, itchy bottom, stool stuck to the anus and sometimes worms. Causes of bloody and mucousy stool and a decreased appetite are many: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, food allergy or intolerance. If she is on monthly heart worm prevention it also is a monthly dewormer making worms less likely. The only way to know for sure is to drop a stool sample off at your vet to have it tested. I can't tell if what is in her stool is worms or strings of mucous. I would start Bella on a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. Check er bottom for hanging pieces of feces. if she continues to scoot then she should have her anal glands checked. Below is a link to a good general dewormer. This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be fleas or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat Bella with a high quality flea treatment (e.g. advantage), then get her to the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy. Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics). simultaneously you should start her on a prescription hypoallergenic diet for at least 2 months. Hopefully you will see some results after all this, if not you and your vet should consider putting her on a long term allergy treatment (Atopica or Apoquel).
