Why is my dog licking his butt and acting agitated after grooming?

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 3 months old

My dog just got groomed and he's now very agitated and anxious, he keeps licking his butthole even if I try to stop him. Checked it, it looks fine!

Poor pup! It sounds like he may have some irritation in this area. This can sometimes happen due to skin irritation from the clippers (if his rear end was shaved), a local allergic reaction to the shampoo or other grooming products, or possibly even an anal gland problem since this often causes dogs to act this way. I would recommend getting a topical hydrocortisone spray or ointment labeled for dogs (you can get this at Walmart or most pet stores) and apply to the area to help soothe it. You can also get him a plastic e-collar if needed to keep him from continuing to lick the area and make it more irritated. If he's still acting uncomfortable after 24 hours, I would recommend having him seen by a vet to determine the problem and get him prescription medication to relieve the discomfort.

Sometimes this behavior can indicate she is in discomfort or has anxiety. Examine the areas she is licking closely. Razor burn or a rash could be the reason. Fleas can also hang out in these areas. Monitor her very closely for any signs of illness. If the behavior continues beyond 48 hours or if you see illness, have Mia examined by the veterinarian. Dog shaking, hiding, and rear discomfort after a short groom?

A lot of dogs feel "ashamed" after a radical hair cut. It also feels so different , and probably smells different and they do not understand what happened. So that is likely one reason why he is irritated. As for him looking back at his bum....unfortunately many groomers offer the service of "emptying anal glands", but do not do this properly, so often the anal glands would be irritated at best, or bruised at worst. It is possible that they are hurting. If this does not go away by tomorrow, I suggest you have them checked by your vet to make sure they were not damaged in the process.

Why is my dog itchy and scooting after grooming? How to help.

Poor Benji! This can sometimes happen after grooming, if there is some skin irritation in these areas caused by the clippers. You can try applying some topical hydrocortisone spray to the irritated areas every 8-12 hours for the next few days to help give him some relief - you should be able to find a spray labeled for use in dogs at most pet stores. I would also recommend mentioning to the groomer next time that he had this issue - that way, they can be extra careful not to give him any "clipper burn" in these sensitive areas in the future :)

Dog's butt red and licking after sanitary shave. What can I do?

I would give him a cool water bath with a hypoallergenic shampoo to soothe the skin. He should be in a cone if he’s licking the area. It is most likely from the shaving. You can give Benadryl to calm the itching. There is a section on this website with dosages and facts about common over the counter medications you can give your dog. The cortisone cream may help calm the skin too. This may take several days for the irritation to improve. If he makes sores please take him in for an exam and medication to control the itching. My dog's butt is irritated after clipping. What to use for licking?

I would use a hydrocortisone cream or spray. You can either use a human product or one made for dogs. Doesn't really matter. The dog spray is better, in my opinion, because it dries faster and then you don't have to worry about them licking it. Dog licking bottom & stinky after grooming. Is it anal glands?

Sometimes after the anal glands are expressed there will be some residual irritation, especially if they were very full, so Nicco may continue to lick and scoot for the next couple of days. There may be some odor released just from the licking and scooting or if there was a little bit if fluid left in the glands or stuck on the fur. You could start by putting a cone on him so he can't lick and then applying a topical steroid such as hydrocortisone to decrease the irritation. If it continues, or starts to look worse, I would recommend taking him to your veterinarian for an examination.

My dog bites his tail and whines after grooming. What can I do?

Two causes come to mind: 1) Hachi picked up fleas at the groomers and now they are congregating in the tail area and are biting him. Check the base of the tail for fleas and fea dirt and use a flea preventive regularly. 2) Unfortunately many groomers think they know how to empty anal glands and when it is to be done (even when there is no need to!) and do it wrongly, squeezing hard from the outside. THis often bruises the anal sacs and the area around them and starts to get inflamed and hurts. If you can rule out fleas, I suggest you take Hachi to your vet for an exam of the anal glands. He may need an antiinflammatory to resolve the irritation and possible pain.

Why is my dog scooting after grooming? Did groomer damage anal glands?

yes, I am afraid it is possible that a groomer damages anal glands. Most groomers offer emptying anal glands as a service, however, do not do this correctly and also do it even when it is not necessary. Emptying anal glands/sacs should be done by a veterinarian and only after the vet examines them and determines that they actually are impacted and need emptying. So, when you take your dog to the groomer adamantly request that they leave the anal sacs alone. As for the scooting and furiously licking, dogs with food allergies often can get irritated anal glands. It may be worth trying some hypoallergenic food for 8 to 12 weeks to see whether this subsides. If so, then your dog is suffering from food allergies and you want to discuss an elimination diet with your veterinarian.
