My dog vomited red. Is it blood? What if I can't afford a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 27 lbs

My dog just threw up and when I was cleaning it up, I noticed that there was something red in there that looked like blood. What should I do? I can't really afford a vet bill right now. Please help!

Shorty and crew are cute! If it was just one episode of vomiting, and Shorty seems fine otherwise, I would not panic. If the vomiting continues, or if Shorty does not want to eat, or starts having diarrhea or acting poorly, I'd be concerned. Sometimes vomiting can cause a small amount of throat irritation and blood in the vomit. Large amounts of blood in the vomit are much more concerning.
