My dog vomited red. Is it blood? What if I can't afford a vet?

Offer very small amounts of food and water today. If he can eat it and it stays down wait a couple of hours and repeat. If he is painful in his belly, looks bloated or continues to vomit this may be severe and you need to figure out how to get him to the vet.

It is possible that the vomit has blood in it, though I would not expect it to have flecks in it. It is possible that Koda ate something that was red/pink in color that made his vomit this color. However, even the possibility of blood in vomit is cause for concern as this can be caused by stomach ulcers, foreign bodies, or certain toxins. I recommend keeping a very close eye on Koda, and having her examined immediately if this happens again or your believe you are seeing something that looks like frank blood or dark coffee grounds in her vomit. She should also be seen immediately if you think there is a chance that she may have eaten something she shouldn't have or has gotten into human medications. Until she can be seen by a vet tomorrow, I recommend not giving her any food and only offering small amounts of water. There are emergency clinics in most cities that are open 24 hours. Hello. A small amount of blood in vomitus may simply indicate that a small blood vessel, like a capillary, ruptured during the vomiting act. If it occurs again, it might be a good idea to find out if there are any issues or lesions either in the esophagus or upper part of the stomach. You indicate that Sonny is less than 2 years of age, so I would nor expect anything too serious, such as cancer, but the presence of an inflammatory or erosive lesion is a possibility. Your veterinarian may be able to examine the upper part of Sonny's esophagus under light sedation, or he may need to be thoroughly scoped to examine the lower part of the esophagus & stomach. Poor Snowflake! Vomiting bright red blood is always a concern, so I would recommend taking her to the vet right away for an exam - she may have eaten something toxic, or could have a stomach ulcer, a foreign body that has caused some damage her to her stomach, or even a systemic bleeding disorder of some kind. If she has been vomiting multiple times in the last 24 hours, this can also sometimes cause blood in the vomiting due to irritation of the stomach and esophagus. Your vet can do blood work and x-rays if needed to help determine what is causing the bloody vomit, and get Snowflake started on appropriate treatment for the problem right away.

If it was the one episode of vomiting and he is otherwise acting normally then I would be concerned but not panicked. I would watch him for the next 24 hours to see what happens. As puppies are prone to getting into things they shouldn't, Simba may have ingested a toxin such as human pain medication or a piece of a toy. It is concerning that Simba did not feel well after vomiting. I recommend having him seen by a vet as vomiting blood can be a sign of a serious underlying condition. It definitely can be a little bit of blood but I wonder if any of the treats or food he recently ate was red or had red pieces in it.
