My dog threw up blood and isn't eating. When should I see a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | neutered | 4 years old | 60 lbs

My dog vomited blood diluted bile and hasn't eaten yet today but was acting fine yesterday. He had eaten meat a couple days ago but I can't think of what else he may have gotten into as he is around us constantly. We are on a steep icy back road in the mountains that we shouldn't be driving on. Is it okay if I just keep an eye on him for now instead of rushing to the vet? He is has G.I. problems as a rule so he eats Hills Digestive Support. His stools have been okay and he is resting.

If it was a one time instance, then yes, it should be OK to just watch him right now. I do think he should see a vet for sure if it happens again - bloody vomit is not a good sign. If you have some on hand, you can give him oral Omeprazole 10mg once per day. It would be a good idea.

If the vomiting continues or he seems lethargic than he should be seen by a vet. He could have a parasite or infection and your vet can run some diagnostic tests, if needed, to help diagnose. He may need a dewormer, antibiotics, antacid, gastrointestinal protectant, or other medications depending on the cause.

Poor Spock! There are a number of things that could cause vomiting blood that would not show up on x-rays. Some possibilities would include a bleeding stomach ulcer, HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis), a systemic bleeding disorder of some kind, ingestion of something toxic, or irritation to the stomach and esophagus from repeated episodes of vomiting. It's good that his bloodwork was normal also, as this makes it less likely that the problem is something serious :)

He should be feeling better with medication from your vet within the next 24 hours. If not, I would recommend calling your vet or taking Spock back for a recheck to make sure that everything is okay.

I'm sorry Spock isn't doing well at the moment! If he had a foreign body causing a a complete or partial obstruction, I would expect to see diarrhea or a complete cessation of pooping. I agree that if the vet suspected a foreign body, she would have have done more testing such as an exploratory surgery. I would keep giving Spock his medications as prescribed and the diet. I hope this gives you peace of mind and he keeps getting better!

My dog vomited blood and grass but seems fine. Should I go to ER?

Bloody vomitus is concerning. It can indicate a gastric ulcer or a very inflamed stomach wall. Since she has just had the one episode you can keep an eye on her for now. However, if the bloody vomit continues (like more than 3 times tonight), then I would recommend taking her to the ER. Do not feed her any more tonight and let her have small amounts of water if she can keep it down. If she is not back to herself in the next 24 hours then I would recommend taking her in to your regular vet tomorrow to be checked out.

It sounds as Walter is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

Hello. A small amount of blood in vomitus may simply indicate that a small blood vessel, like a capillary, ruptured during the vomiting act. If it occurs again, it might be a good idea to find out if there are any issues or lesions either in the esophagus or upper part of the stomach. You indicate that Sonny is less than 2 years of age, so I would nor expect anything too serious, such as cancer, but the presence of an inflammatory or erosive lesion is a possibility. Your veterinarian may be able to examine the upper part of Sonny's esophagus under light sedation, or he may need to be thoroughly scoped to examine the lower part of the esophagus & stomach. My dog vomited pinkish-red and has diarrhea. Should I see a vet?

The color of the vomit could be caused by some blood (e.g. an injury in the esophagus) or coloring of the food he ate or severe inflammation somewhere in the gastrointestinal tract. Diarrhea and throwing up can have many causes. It is basically a problem with the stomach and intestines caused by a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc. I would fast Max for 24 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to his regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or stays bloody, or if he gets lethargic, he needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.
