My dog is vomiting yellow bile on prednisone. Is it an emergency?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 5 years and 9 months old | 68 lbs

My dog has thrown up yellow/green bile five times in the past hour and a half. She keeps licking her lips, too. She has also been on prednisone in addition to taking apoquel. Should I make a call to the emergency veterinary hospital or can I wait until her vet appointment at 10:20?

When the vomiting does not stop and there is nothing left in the stomach to throw up except bile (a yellow fluid). It is important you take your pet to a veterinarian in these types of cases to get some relief, the vet can give her anti emetic to help stop the vomiting). gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting and diarrhea can be side effects of Apoquel . Also changes in prednisone dose (if there were any?) can have an effect as it is a drug that should not stop abruptly and the tapering of the dose needs to be very slow. So if there was for example a reduction too fast in the prednisone dose that could also cause vomiting as part of Addisonal crisis which is an emergency. Bottom line if she does not stop vomiting or she seems very lethargic and weak in the next hour take her to the emergency vet but if the vomit subside and she gets back to her normal self then go first thing in the morning.

I would recommend you start supportive care (like Famotiidne 05-1.0mg/kg every 12 hrs and a bland diet like Purina EN Gastrointestinal canned food OR boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese. Dog throwing up foamy yellow bile with blood after allergy meds?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I highly recommend that you have Tack evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Sometimes blood in the vomit can be seen with things like gastrointestinal ulceration which can occur secondary to medications, especially prednisone which is a commonly used medication for allergies. If this seems like a possibility, they would start her on medications for an ulcer. Good luck! I am keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!

My dog is vomiting and has diarrhea on prednisone and doxycycline.

Poor Layla! Her vomiting may be caused by the antibiotics, which can cause nausea and in rare cases, constriction of the esophagus. Steroids (prednisone) can cause stomach ulcers and kidney issues in high, chronic doses. Unfortunately, the vomiting and lethargy can be caused by a number of other conditions, which can just be a coincidence, so I recommend having Layla seen as soon as possible to rule out things like intestinal obstructions or torsion.

This could be due to acid reflux. You can try an ant acid medication such as omeperazole to see if it helps. If you don’t see improvement in 1 to 2 weeks, you should follow up with your veterinarian for diagnostics including bloodwork and X-rays.

Abbey may be eating dinner too early and getting hungry before going to sleep for the night. I recommend trying to feed her dinner a little later than normal. The signs you are describing can be unrelated to hunger, especially if Abbey does not eat meals. Vomiting can be caused by intestinal inflammation, hormonal conditions such as Addison’s disease or low thyroid levels. I recommend changing Abbey’s mealtime (if she is fed meals) for a day or two to see if this helps resolve the issue. If not, she should be seen by her vet to rule out the conditions above.

My dog vomited yellow liquid after eating pills. Is he at risk?

Hello, any dietary indiscretion may elicit vomiting just by being something new to their GI tract and not necessarily due to a side effect. There are some medications however which may cause vomiting and other GI signs as a main side effect. Because it has been determined that these pills were not harmful to Dodger I would recommend continuing to monitor him. As long as he is no longer vomiting, having a decreased appetite, or develops diarrhea then he should be ok. If you note any of these signs then you should have him evaluated by your veterinarian. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If it is more than a couple of hours after taking her medication before she vomited, Bailey probably got most of her dose. However if she continues to vomit, or isn't eating at all after 48 hours she may need some fluid therapy. I would recommend contacting her vet tomorrow if she still isn't eating. If she vomits anymore tonight or seems to feel worse then she may need to go to an emergency clinic tonight.
