Why does my dog vomit yellow bile in the morning on an empty stomach?

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 67 lbs

My dog is about 1 yr 4 months and every month or so (sometimes more frequent + less frequent) since I’ve had him ( October) he has vomited generally in morning. There’s never really any food in it just bile, and he has an appetite. Should I be concerned or is it just cause he hadn’t had food since the evening? He is about 65-70lbs pitbull

This could be due to acid reflux. You can try an ant acid medication such as omeperazole to see if it helps. If you don’t see improvement in 1 to 2 weeks, you should follow up with your veterinarian for diagnostics including bloodwork and X-rays.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. With your description, I would suspect this may be due to the diet. Many cases, about 65-70% of vomiting / diarrhea cases, can be linked directly to the diet or an imbalance of the normal intestinal bacteria. I would recommend switching to a brand new food altogether (Royal Canin, Science Diet, Natural Balance, Purina One). Give the new diet about 4-6 weeks and see if there is an improvement. I would also consider adding a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora, which can be found online or at your local pet store. I hope this helps! Poor Onyx, and you! That's a lot of mess to clean up each morning and I'm sure he doesn't enjoy it either. Some dogs vomit if their stomach is empty too long. This is called bilious vomiting. 11:30pm to 7am is NOT generally too long, but Onyx may be a bit more sensitive than the average dog. I would recommend setting an alarm to feed him a bit earlier (maybe 5am) for a few days and see if that makes a difference. If not, then it's time for a trip to his veterinarian to get checked out. A complete workup from your vet is best to rule out anything more serious such as food allergies, GI problems, etc that could be underlying and are being masked by the medication if the problems are persisting. In some cases, reflux and vomiting bile can happen if your dog has an empty stomach for too long. Feeding smaller meals more frequently, or feeding a treat right before bed/waking up first thing can help keep enough in the stomach to keep your dog from vomiting. However, I would still let your vet know the vomiting is continuing when off the meds and schedule a vet visit to rule out any issues anyway.

Hello. Acid reflux can result from several things, not just the production of acid in response to food in the stomach. Esophageal disease/motility disorders, diet, over-secretion of pepsin & non-specific inflammation can all contribute to the problem. It may be as simple as switching to a sensitive skin/stomach formulation of dog food, or an actual GI diet or one geared toward allergies such as Prescription Diet z/d. Adding an acid reflux medication such as famotidine or omeprazole is often a pretty safe option to try. Talk to your vet about what might be the best option for Gemma. Vomiting is sometimes seen with conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis and chronic kidney disease, among many other conditions. Given Mugsy's young age and the fact that he is otherwise doing fine and this is sporadic, dietary indiscretion appears more likely. It may be something as easy as just changing his diet to something that he can tolerate better. However, an examination by a veterinarian as well as minimal diagnostic data would be needed to rule out more concerning things. You can start by changing his diet to a sensitive stomach type diet. If no improvement, have him examined by a veterinarian to start therapy if needed based on findings. Good luck!

Dogs generally vomit bile when they have an empty stomach. I recommend feeding small meals several times daily to reduce the vomiting. Or you can give a treat or two just before bed and first thing in the morning. Generally this is nothing to be overly concerned about. If she continues to vomit, doesn't feel well or starts losing weight then please take her in for and exam and bloodwork. My dog is throwing up yellow bile and food. What should I do now?

If your pet has vomited this much in the past 45 minutes I would be very suspicious of a foreign body or a very intense dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn't have). I would recommend you start supportive care (like Famotiidne 05-1.0mg/kg every 12 hrs and a bland diet like Purina EN Gastrointestinal canned food OR boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese. However there is a big possibility that this could have been a toxicity and if any more symptoms start to arise (such as ataxia (staggering) or shaking, crying out) then I highly recommend you seek a personal veterinarian for a physical examination and further diagnostics. - Dr. H

My dog vomits bile before meals. Is it acid reflux? What can I do?

Chronic vomiting can be frustrating especially since everything you have tried so far. I know you have been to the vet a lot but Led does not to go back tonhave radiographs or an ultrasound done to look inside his abdomen and intestines and possibly a biopsy to find the underlying cause instead of symptomatic treatment.
