My dog is vomiting and has diarrhea on prednisone and doxycycline.

Both doxycycline and prednisone can cause vomiting and diarrhea. I am not sure of the dose that your dog is on but maybe your vet could adjust the dose so he has less gastrointestinal problems. Feeding the medication with a meal can sometimes help with the gastrointestinal side effects so make sure to give with food. Your vet could also prescribe an anti-vomiting medication, probiotic, and GI protectant which may help, too. At this point, If he is just going to vomit the medication than it doesn't make sense to give it. You should wait and see if your vet can prescribe additional medications to help with the vomiting and diarrhea. If the vomiting and diarrhea has stopped, you could try to give one medication at a time with food and see how he does.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Chlyo, this has been a tough week for him I recommend calling your Vet. Maalox is not my first choice to fix diarrhea and vomiting. Doxycycline is an antibiotic notorious for causing tummy upset, regardless if you accidentally gave too much. High doses of steroids can cause tummy upset. Prednisone can not be abruptly stopped and needs to be weaned and in Chlyo's case is likely needed to save his life if he has immune mediated hemolytic anemia. There are other antibiotic choices to rule out tick borne disease causing his immune disease. My recommendations is to call your Vet and have Chlyo seen again today. If he was my patient I would use cerenia, metronidazole and have him on prilosec or famotidine (pepcid). I would not stop or wean the prednisone unless his red blood cell count was normal. I would temporarily stop the doxycycline until he is eating and the stool is better and consider amoxicillin instead. The extra dose probably caused the vomiting. Doxycycline does cause vomiting as a side effect. If the vomiting resolves, then I would not be concerned. If the vomiting persists, contact your veterinarian.

When the vomiting does not stop and there is nothing left in the stomach to throw up except bile (a yellow fluid). It is important you take your pet to a veterinarian in these types of cases to get some relief, the vet can give her anti emetic to help stop the vomiting). gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting and diarrhea can be side effects of Apoquel . Also changes in prednisone dose (if there were any?) can have an effect as it is a drug that should not stop abruptly and the tapering of the dose needs to be very slow. So if there was for example a reduction too fast in the prednisone dose that could also cause vomiting as part of Addisonal crisis which is an emergency. Bottom line if she does not stop vomiting or she seems very lethargic and weak in the next hour take her to the emergency vet but if the vomit subside and she gets back to her normal self then go first thing in the morning.

It would be unusual to see diarrhea as a side effect of prednisone, so I would suspect fat something else may be causing it. If your dog is acting normal otherwise, you can try withholding food for the next 12-24 hours and then feeding plain boiled chicken and white rice for the next few days. If this doesn't help, or if she develops any other symptoms such as vomiting, acting lethargic, or not wanting to eat, then I would recommend having her examined by a vet as she may have a more serious problem.

Hello. No, these medications generally do not cause a lack of energy. I wonder if she just knows she needs to rest to get over her infection. It is possible that she could be having a sensitivity to the antibiotic or this could be another complication to her upset tummy. I would make sure you are feeding her a complete meal then wait 15-20 minutes befor giving her the antibiotics. Also you may want to try feeding her only plain chicken (no bones) and rice as This is bland and easy on the tummy for recovery. If This doesn’t help then I would talk to your vet about a recheck. Your vet may want to give her an anti-nausea medicine, change her antibiotics or take X-rays if indicated. I hope this helps!
