My dog is vomiting Vetprofen for hip pain. What should I do?

Without reviewing the full blood results and changes over time it is very difficult to say for sure but if your dog is unwell (especially with increased thirst, vomiting or diarrhea) and blood results are developing more concerning changes then I would be concerned about continuing with carprofen until a conclusion can be reached as to what is causing the chenges in the blood work. Obviously however, Buddy is in pain and shoudl be receiving some pain relief in order to improve his comfort leveles - you shoud speak to your vet about other types of pain relief or deek referral to a specialist

This can be a side effect from the medications. I'm particularly worried about the carprofen. We generally recommend discontinuing the use of Carprofen if they are having vomiting and/or diarrhea. It's best to discontinue the Carprofen and Gabapentin for now until you can contact your veterinarian. They will likely want to examine Harley and possibly prescribe some different medications for now. I would not worry at this point but I suggest you not give her any more Vetprofen until 24 hours after the last dose. If you have some Pepcid (famotidine) 10mg on-hand you can give her one of those daily for the next few days to protect her stomach. If you notice any vomiting or not eating get her to your vet ASAP. The first thing I would do is ask myself if the Galliprant has helped at all with the pain and lameness associated with the leg. The next thing I would ask myself if whether or not any of these other problems existed prior to your original vet visit, or if they occurred immediately after the Galliprant was administered. In general, Galliprant is an extremely safe medication that has almost no known side effects, EXCEPT for vomiting. Panting and trembling could be caused by the general discomfort from the vomiting episodes, or it can be a result of the pain she's experiencing. Ultimately, if the Galliprant is the cause of the vomiting, obviously discontinuing this medication may be in her best interest even if it is helping with the pain. Other medicatiosn are available to addres pain and inflammation that may result in few side effects. You will need to speak with your primary vet about these findings and possibly schedule another visit if need be. Hope this helps.

If he vomited after gving this, then it is very likely he isn't going to tolerate this medication. I am not sure if you are giving human brand or pet brand, but always give pet formulated joint supplements as these are the proper dosage. Also you should try giving it with food if you haven't done so already. If after these adjustments he is still vomiting, then it is best to not continue giving this and consult with your vet about other options. Best of luck with your pet Tifo moving forward. It is possible that he is feeling nauseous from the Flagyl....that daily dose for a 23 lb dog is often split into two daily doses. It is also possible that he may have a stomach upset/or even an ulcer from the Novox, especially if it was given on an empty stomach. NSAIDs do have the potential of causing vomiting and diarrhea in sensitive dogs. A bland diet of boiled rice and chicken for 3-5 days plus a stomach coating medication called sucralfate daily for a few days +/- an antacid such as famotidine + subcutaneous fluids and bloodwork could be appropriate next steps. I’d recommend returning to your veterinarian or seeking a new vet if you are more comfortable with a new vet. Hopefully the lameness is no longer an issue and with relatively conservative management the vomiting and diarrhea can be resolved as well. Good luck!

If Max has been on antiinflammatories for a while now, I would recommend having his blood tested annually to make sure the medications are not causing damage to the liver or kidneys. With max being the age he is I would recommend annual blood work anyway even if he was not on medication so that any changes can be detected early. Switching to a bland diet for sensitive stomachs may also help. Purina has a probiotics called Fortiflora which may aid in digestion so I would also consider adding this in with his food.
