My old dog vomited after Galliprant. Is this a side effect? What now?

Hello. She may be act slightly sedated, tired, even wobbly when she walks. It should last a few hours if it does happen but it will wear off on its own. Monitor her at home and don’t let her outside by herself as she may be slow to react to things. This should not require an emergency vet visit. Hello. There have been no known unsuspected problems with Galliprant. It is safer to use in pets that may have some problems with their livers, but all non-steroidal drugs have side effects. With routine monitoring, most potentially harmful side effects can be mitigated quickly. Just follow your veterinarians recommendations. This is a tough question and I can understand why you are confused on what to do. If you are concerned your dog is in pain and that the Galliprant is not helping then it may be time to switch pain medications or add in another medication to see if your dog gets some added relief. I have found that some NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) work better in certain dogs than in others. I usually encourage my clients to switch NSAIDs if they don’t feel like one is working particularly well for their dog. It is very similar in humans, some prefer Alieve while others prefer Advil. All drugs have potential side effects to be aware of and it is up to your veterinarian to decide which of those would be safest for your dog based on your dog’s previous medical history. It sounds as if your dog is otherwise happy and healthy so he could be a good candidate to try Deramaxx. If you were my client, I would probably recommend adding in an additional pain controlling drug before switching to another NSAID since Jackie is doing well on the Galliprant. I will add though that I have prescribed Deramaxx several times over the years and do not feel like I see more reactions with it than with any other drug. These medications can certainly be given on the same day. No concerns for drug interactions here whatsoever. Please also continue to monitor for any signs of GI upset however from the medications themselves, which includes vomiting, diarrhea or decreased appetite and notify your vet immediately if seen. Only a small percentage of pets will have an adverse reaction to these medications. Both medications should be gien after a small meal. It is possible that he is feeling nauseous from the Flagyl....that daily dose for a 23 lb dog is often split into two daily doses. It is also possible that he may have a stomach upset/or even an ulcer from the Novox, especially if it was given on an empty stomach. NSAIDs do have the potential of causing vomiting and diarrhea in sensitive dogs. A bland diet of boiled rice and chicken for 3-5 days plus a stomach coating medication called sucralfate daily for a few days +/- an antacid such as famotidine + subcutaneous fluids and bloodwork could be appropriate next steps. I’d recommend returning to your veterinarian or seeking a new vet if you are more comfortable with a new vet. Hopefully the lameness is no longer an issue and with relatively conservative management the vomiting and diarrhea can be resolved as well. Good luck!

I'm sorry to hear that Capi is having problem with his hip. Unfortunately, vomiting is one of the potential side effects of Vetprofen. This can be a side effect from the medications. I'm particularly worried about the carprofen. We generally recommend discontinuing the use of Carprofen if they are having vomiting and/or diarrhea. It's best to discontinue the Carprofen and Gabapentin for now until you can contact your veterinarian. They will likely want to examine Harley and possibly prescribe some different medications for now.
