This could be normal but if Macho is not eating, not feeling much better, and is still vomiting, he needs to go back for a recheck and a Parvovirus test. He may need to be on IV fluids and anti-nausea medications as well if he doesn't seem to be improving within the next few hours. That is good that you stopped the Novox as this can sometimes cause vomiting / diarrhea. I would start a bland diet as suggested below and if the vomiting / diarrhea persist for more than 24 hours, I would contact your veterinarian and have Aspen seen for further treatments as there are medications we can give to stop vomiting and help resolve the diarrhea. You can give Pepto Bismol but I would only give this for 24 hours and no longer. The dose for Pepto Bismol would be approximately 7ml by mouth every 8 hours. It is low in fiber, fat and protein and is high in carbohydrates. Bland diets are generally composed of a single carbohydrate source and a single lean protein source. The most common bland diet is boiled rice and boiled lean chicken breast, without skin and bones. Since bland diets are low in fiber, stool production slows and defecation is less frequent. Bland diets are fed to rest the gastric system and to help promote normal stool formation. Animals that are physically sick should not be fed bland diets as a method of treatment. PRIOR TO FEEDING A BLAND DIET Pets should be fasted for 12 to 24 hours. Young animals should not be fasted for more than 12 hours. Fasting will allow the intestinal system to relax and minimize acid secretions that may irritate and inflame the intestinal lining. During the fast small amounts of water or ice chips may be provided. Never fast a sick animal, it may cause disease progression and death. Yes, this can be due to this medication. This medication can rarely cause damage to the lining of the stomach and intestines, which can cause a lack of appetite, vomiting and/or diarrhea. We normally advise clients to give this drug with food and to stop the medication if vomiting, diarrhea or a lack of appetite occurs. Considering this, I recommend discontinuing the medication until you are able to have Fifi evaluated by your vet. For now, it's OK to give Fifi's stomach a rest. You can offer a bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good) and see if she will eat that. Feed small portions (1/2 cup or less) three times a day. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available. Cotrimoxazole can cause GI upset and it may not be the best antibiotic for Cookie. Metronidazole is an good antibiotic for GI bacteria, but it can cause severe side effects if used in high doses over the day (I generally prescribe it for twice daily usage). Continued vomiting despite treatment means that there may be something else going on. Antinausea medications will help, but only if things like a GI obstruction have been completely ruled out. If your veterinarian approves this plan, a typical rule of thumb is to feed 1 cup of a 50:50 chicken/rice mixture for every 10 pounds of body weight per day, divided into 3-4 smaller meals.
