My dog threw up, won't eat or drink, and has chest pain. What's wrong?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | unneutered | 7 years and 10 months old | 16 lbs

My dog is a miniature toy poodle who is about 8 years old. He threw up Monday night. In the last 30 hours he hasn't ate any food and barely drank water on his own. I have been giving him Pedialyte to keep him hydrated. For the first 24 hours his breathing was very shallow and fast about 50 breaths per minute but has now been breathing normal. He was also shaking like he was cold but that has gone away. He seems to be sore around the chest area. What can be wrong with him?

I would be worried that Toby may have pancreatitis, liver disease, or any other cause of pain. It would be best if he saw his veterinarian in order to have a physical exam performed. He may also need blood work or x-rays depending on what the veterinarian finds. You can try offering him a bland diet of boiled chicken, hamburger, or turkey and rice.
