My dog's on Galliprant. Is Deramaxx safe to switch to for pain?

Galliprant vs Deramaxx. Which is better for my dog? He's been on Galliprant for 3 months and I'm not sure of any improvements but no harm either. My new vet recommends Deramaxx but she didn't know about Galliprant, which concerns me. I am scared to give Deramaxx to my dog because of bad reviews online. My dog has healthy liver and kidney and I don't want to ruin it. My vet doesn't know if he is actually in pain. Deramaxx may or may not do anything to help. I am very scared of the side effects.

This is a tough question and I can understand why you are confused on what to do. If you are concerned your dog is in pain and that the Galliprant is not helping then it may be time to switch pain medications or add in another medication to see if your dog gets some added relief.

I have found that some NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) work better in certain dogs than in others. I usually encourage my clients to switch NSAIDs if they don’t feel like one is working particularly well for their dog. It is very similar in humans, some prefer Alieve while others prefer Advil.

All drugs have potential side effects to be aware of and it is up to your veterinarian to decide which of those would be safest for your dog based on your dog’s previous medical history. It sounds as if your dog is otherwise happy and healthy so he could be a good candidate to try Deramaxx.

If you were my client, I would probably recommend adding in an additional pain controlling drug before switching to another NSAID since Jackie is doing well on the Galliprant. I will add though that I have prescribed Deramaxx several times over the years and do not feel like I see more reactions with it than with any other drug.

I can understand your concerns. Deramaxx, just like any other pet formulated NSAID, has the potential to cause adverse reactions in dogs. There is no medicine for suspected osteoarthritis that is considered 100% free of possible side effects in dogs. With that said, you should be informed on the potential side effects and what symptoms to watch out for that could indicate there is a problem, such as vomiting, lethargy, decreased appetite, loose stool with or without blood, and to notify your vet if any are seen. And if your pets history of health is unclear or unknown to your vet, bloodwork should even be considered before the first dose is given. My old dog vomited after Galliprant. Is this a side effect? What now?

The first thing I would do is ask myself if the Galliprant has helped at all with the pain and lameness associated with the leg. The next thing I would ask myself if whether or not any of these other problems existed prior to your original vet visit, or if they occurred immediately after the Galliprant was administered. In general, Galliprant is an extremely safe medication that has almost no known side effects, EXCEPT for vomiting. Panting and trembling could be caused by the general discomfort from the vomiting episodes, or it can be a result of the pain she's experiencing. Ultimately, if the Galliprant is the cause of the vomiting, obviously discontinuing this medication may be in her best interest even if it is helping with the pain. Other medicatiosn are available to addres pain and inflammation that may result in few side effects. You will need to speak with your primary vet about these findings and possibly schedule another visit if need be. Hope this helps.

Should I give my dog Deramaxx if he just finished steroid pills?

You are correct that drugs like Deramaxx should not be given currently with steroids because of the risk of GI ulceration. There should also be a wash out period after steroid use before starting NSAIDs (like Deramaxx) appropriate in length for the time on the drug. What's best for my dog's arthritis: Previcox, Meloxicam, or Galliprant?

Each of them work slightly differently but at the end of the day all three of them reduce inflammation which is probably the most important aspect of treating arthritis. there is no definitive answer to your question, each dog respond differently to pain medications, some dogs will benefit more from one over the other two. i would probably advise starting with Meloxicam first.
