My dog is vomiting foamy blood after hives. What should I do?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I highly recommend that you have Tack evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Sometimes blood in the vomit can be seen with things like gastrointestinal ulceration which can occur secondary to medications, especially prednisone which is a commonly used medication for allergies. If this seems like a possibility, they would start her on medications for an ulcer. Good luck! I am keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!

Allergic reactions after bug bites in dogs can result in a swollen face, and can also result in some gastritis (vomiting and diarrhea). It looks like the swelling is improving which is good. I would suggest a vet visit if you can for the vomiting and diarrhea, however if that isn't possible then I would suggest to feed a bland diet of boiled/boneless/skinless chicken breasts and boiled rice, in small frequent meals for the next couple days. This will heal up a mild gastritis. The swelling will take time to come down, so just monitor that it isn't getting worse. If the diarrhea continues or if it becomes very bloody (looks like jam) then you will need to figure out how to take him to a vet. Best of luck with Charlie!

I would recommend having Cookie examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Judging from the picture you provided, it appears as though there is blood in the material that was vomited. This could indicate an ulcer or severe gastritis (inflammation of the stomach). Your veterinarian can provide you with the most appropriate prescription medications to help alleviate the vomiting and help relieve any discomfort in the stomach. I am so sorry that Chanita is dealing with this. I would highly recommend calling your veterinarian and taking her to see them. This looks like it could potentially be an allergic reaction and that would explain why the benadryl helped and the lesions are no longer there. She may still have some of the allergen affecting her. Your veterinarian can perform blood work to make sure there is nothing else going on with her and then give her medication to help with the allergen. They can also vomit from an allergic reaction so it does not surprise me. Regarding her stool you can always try a bland diet (boiled chicken and white rice). Hello. I am so sorry for your concerns about Sweet Pea's vomiting. There are many things that cause vomiting, from bacterial/viral infections, indiscriminate garbage eating, ingestion of a foreign body, stomach twists ( volvulus ), & intussusceptions. The blood is probably just from small capillaries in the cardia of the stomach or the esophagus that have broken from all the retching. It would be nice if you could have her seen tonight, where at least an anti-nausea medication can be given to slow down the vomiting. If not, you can administer about 5 mg of Pepcid, & please have her seen tomorrow. You do not want her to get worse by becoming dehydrated. You can offer her ice cubes to lick on, but no solid food or water for her to gulp down. Try to keep her from eating more grass as this will just stimulate her to vomit again. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry Bobo is sick! Bloody flecks usually indicates that the stomach lining is ulcerated. It can be from all the common reasons for vomiting: ate something gross, food sensitivity, viral or bacterial infection, pancreatitis, toxins, metabolic isssues or drug reaction. Try fasting her for 12-24 hrs then feed as "sip and nibble" of water and bland diet. Try boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. About 3/4 cup per day. If she continues to vomit while fasted or once you start feeding you should take her to the Vet. I hope this helps! Good luck!

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can definitely see that Koda's vomit is reddish in color and has some red flecks in it. It is possible that the vomit has blood in it, though I would not expect it to have flecks in it. It is possible that Koda ate something that was red/pink in color that made his vomit this color. However, even the possibility of blood in vomit is cause for concern as this can be caused by stomach ulcers, foreign bodies, or certain toxins. I recommend keeping a very close eye on Koda, and having her examined immediately if this happens again or your believe you are seeing something that looks like frank blood or dark coffee grounds in her vomit. She should also be seen immediately if you think there is a chance that she may have eaten something she shouldn't have or has gotten into human medications. Until she can be seen by a vet tomorrow, I recommend not giving her any food and only offering small amounts of water. There are emergency clinics in most cities that are open 24 hours.
