My dog is throwing up foamy vomit with red streaks. What should I do?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can definitely see that Koda's vomit is reddish in color and has some red flecks in it. It is possible that the vomit has blood in it, though I would not expect it to have flecks in it. It is possible that Koda ate something that was red/pink in color that made his vomit this color. However, even the possibility of blood in vomit is cause for concern as this can be caused by stomach ulcers, foreign bodies, or certain toxins. I recommend keeping a very close eye on Koda, and having her examined immediately if this happens again or your believe you are seeing something that looks like frank blood or dark coffee grounds in her vomit. She should also be seen immediately if you think there is a chance that she may have eaten something she shouldn't have or has gotten into human medications. Until she can be seen by a vet tomorrow, I recommend not giving her any food and only offering small amounts of water. There are emergency clinics in most cities that are open 24 hours. It definitely can be a little bit of blood but I wonder if any of the treats or food he recently ate was red or had red pieces in it. This may be due to gastrointestinal upset which may resolve on its own. I would continue monitoring her and have her evaluated if this continues, or you notice other signs of illness such as diarrhea or inappetence. Good luck!

If Odin vomited up foreign material and is continuing to vomit, I would strongly suggest getting him in to be seen by a veterinarian sooner rather than later. If there is something causing an obstruction somewhere, this can lead to further serious problems that can be life threatening if not addressed right away. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Blood in the vomit indicates most commonly stomach lining irritation or ulceration. The only way heat could cause this is if Doggy is experiencing heat stroke (high body temperature, collapse, etc). When a dog is having heat stroke it is obvious and life threatening. Just general hot weather shouldn't cause vomiting let alone with blood. Causes of vomiting are: viral (especially parvo) or bacterial infections, intestinal parasites, he ate something inappropriate, pancreatitis, a blockage from eating a foreign object that is stuck, toxin ingestion, clotting or platelet problem or from something local to Lebanon. If he continues to vomit with blood that is an emergency and he should be seen by a Vet. If he is lethargic and won't eat currently he should see a Vet. Otherwise I would start a bland diet of boiled chicken breast with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days to rest his stomach. i wish you the best!

The tissue you are describing as chunks is likely blood or GI cells that have sloughed off from constant irritation. Amber could have serious pancreatitis, a foreign body, etc. With her age I would also be rather concerned about liver and/or kidney disease. I would get her to the vet asap to avoid further complications. She will likely need iv fluids and injections for nausea/vomiting and antibiotics. Your vet will likely want to do blood work and x rays to sort through the potential problems I have listed. Something like this is potentially life threatening.

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I highly recommend that you have Tack evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Sometimes blood in the vomit can be seen with things like gastrointestinal ulceration which can occur secondary to medications, especially prednisone which is a commonly used medication for allergies. If this seems like a possibility, they would start her on medications for an ulcer. Good luck! I am keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!
