My dog is vomiting blood and won't eat or drink. What should I do?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Daisy. Contact your local rescue groups, humane societies, low-cost clinics in your area and seek help. Persistent vomiting, bloody diarrhea and lack of appetite are emergent clinic signs due to fluid/electrolyte losses. This leads to dehydration, weakness, and further downward deterioration unless the vomiting stops and the appetite returns. I would advise taking Daisy to your vet as soon as possible to have her evaluated. Many causes are possible including intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion (eating things dogs aren't supposed to), other dietary problems, gastrointestinal inflammation/infection from various sources, toxin exposure, foreign body ingestion, GI ulceration, side effects from drugs or products used, or even problems outside of the gut including pancreatitis, liver/kidney problems, among many others. Your vet can get a detailed history and perform a thorough exam. Once done, a diagnostic plan and preliminary treatment plan can be started. Most likely a minimum database of fecal/blood/urine tests and some x-rays will be advised. Treatment will be focused on the cause but early treatment could include fluids/electrolytes, anti-nausea/vomiting medicines, acid blockers, etc. Good luck with Daisy.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry Bobo is sick! Bloody flecks usually indicates that the stomach lining is ulcerated. It can be from all the common reasons for vomiting: ate something gross, food sensitivity, viral or bacterial infection, pancreatitis, toxins, metabolic isssues or drug reaction. Try fasting her for 12-24 hrs then feed as "sip and nibble" of water and bland diet. Try boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. About 3/4 cup per day. If she continues to vomit while fasted or once you start feeding you should take her to the Vet. I hope this helps! Good luck!

Loss of appetite and vomiting can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Layka evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. You can offer a bland diet which may help. This diet could be composed of rice, boiled chicken, ham, turkey, lean hamburgers or low fat cottage cheese. Hello. Penny may have picked up an infection that is causing her gastrointestinal symptoms. I would withhold all food & water for the next 6-8 hours, & offer the rice again. I like to use the whole grain, sticky rice & not a minute or instant rice. The glutens seem to help bind them up a little better. You can also add a little cooked chicken, but the majority should be the rice. If Penny is no better by Monday, please see your veterinarian as she may need to be on antibiotics, as well. Poor Shelby! Such chronic vomiting with lack ignorance appetite is definitely cause for concern. This may be caused by a stomach ulcer, foreign body, or parasites. I recommend having Shelby seen by a vet right away to determine what is going on and provide the appropriate treatment, which may include fluids, antibiotics, and hospitalization. I'm sorry to hear that Dakota is sick! Poor girl! I'm very concerned that she has vomited a blood clot and is having a hard time eating and urinating. Dakota needs to see a veterinarian right away to have these issues addressed. A blood clot in the vomit can indicate a severe GI ulcer or toxin exposure and subsequent bleeding. If she is unable to urinate she may have a severe UTI, bladder stone, or kidney infection. All of the above conditions require veterinary medical care. It is likely that Dakota may need blood work and a urinalysis to find out what the underlying cause is. She may need fluids and antibiotics in addition to other support care. Urinating blood can indicating a bladder infection or something potentially life threatening like a clotting disorder. The fact that he is also committing indicates systemic illness. The veterinarian will perform a physical exam and then recommend diagnostics such as urinalysis bloodwork or possibly radiographs (xrays). Good luck and I hope he’s better soon.
