New mom dog has bloody diarrhea after birth. Is this normal?

My dog gave birth 3 days ago and started having diarrhea now today she had diarrhea with mucus and blood but shes active and eating

The diarrhea could be related to eating the placentas and afterbirth, or could be a sign of another disease like intestinal parasites. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian for a physical exam and to discuss treatment for the diarrhea. While it's possible simple change like a bland diet and probiotic would be recommended it's always best to have a veterinarian take a look to make sure there's nothing more serious going on.

Yes it may be (the feces should be black though) or it is possible that she is having a gastrointestinal infection/inflammation. If the signs are persistent the second possibility is more likely and a veterinary check up is required. Antibiotics in that case are useful to solve the problem.

It sounds like she has diarrhea, but because she has recently given birth it may be important to get her some help. I'm assuming that she is nursing puppies? If she is, it's important that she doesn't lose too many nutrients. It would be a great idea to take her to see a vet to see if there might be some medication that can help with the diarrhea.

Excessive water consumption, weight loss despite still eating can signal diabetes. If she is nursing puppies, that is the most likely cause for her weight loss. The blood is concerning, it could be anything from parasites, to a viral or bacterial infection, just to name a couple of possibilities. I recommend getting her in to see your vet right away for an exam and labwork. Also, while she is nursing puppies, she should have access to lots of fresh water and as much high calorie puppy food as she wants at all times.

Hormonal changes or diet changes (such as suddenly switching to the puppy food) can sometimes cause diarrhea post-birth, however if it is continuing, bringing in a fecal sample of Lacey's stool to your vet is a good next step. Your vet can check for common parasites or other issues that could be causing the diarrhea, especially if a bland meal hasn't helped. If the diarrhea continues and the fecal comes back negative, a more thorough exam from your vet is best.

It still could be gastroenteritis, which is unrelated to the pregnancy and having puppies but I think it is less likely. You should take Sally to your local vets today, as there may be something serious going on. Another concern is that if she is not eating and drinking but feeding the puppies she will get dehydrated very quickly.

My dog just gave birth. Is her throwing up and diarrhea normal?

Hello. As long as Lola is eating & drinking fairly well, nursing the puppies & seeming to be contented, she should be well. If you have not wormed her in the past few months, I would definitely take a stool sample to your veterinarian now to make sure she will not be passing any parasites to her puppies. Because some parasites are inevitable in puppies, & based on what & if your vet sees anything in the stool, you will need to start administering a wormer to the puppies starting at 2 weeks of age.
