My cat just had kittens and now has diarrhea. Is this normal?

This morning my cat gave birth to 5 kittens now she is having diarrhea.. is this normal or not ??

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is not unusual for animals to have some diarrhea after giving birth. As long as she continues to eat well, this should slowly resolve over the course of the next 3-4 days. If it does not, or if Naughtt develops any other unusual clinical signs, I recommend having her seen by a veterinarian, as an unrelated issue may be present. I hope this is helpful!

It's not uncommon for a cat to have post partum diarrhea. offer her boiled boneless chicken and rice every 4-6 hours in small portions. if she is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 to 4 days. if the diarrhea does not resolve, you will have to take her to the vet to get it treated.

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Transient diarrhea just after labor is common and often caused by the stress of the labor. However, pets can also be particularly prone to intestinal parasites such as roundworms or coccidia after pregnancy, so if the diarrhea lasts more than 24 hours, or if she is acting sick in any way, she should be evaluated by your vet.

The diarrhea could be caused by an infection, parasite, or possibly from something she ate. Your vet can test a stool sample to see if she has a parasite and then prescribe medication to treat. She may need some fluids to prevent dehydration, especially because she is nursing kittens. You may need to remove her from the kittens and clean her up if she has diarrhea on her. Call your vet an have her seen tomorrow as soon as possible. Hope she feels better soon!

I would not be worried about anything at this stage based on your description. However, I recommend you speak to your vet about deworming for mom and the kittens. They can start deworming as early as 2 weeks of age. The diarrhea may be normal due to hormonal changes, could be diet related or it may be due to worms.

My pregnant cat has diarrhea. Is it normal or should I see a vet?

It sounds like your cat has a case of colitis, or an inflammation of the colon, resulting in an increase in the volume and frequency of stools.    Colitis can be caused by many different things. Some of the more common causes include intestinal parasites (most likely in a pregnant cat), dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, irritable bowel disease, pancreatitis, a foreign body/blockage and viruses.   I would recommend taking your cat in to your vet to be examined. They will likely want to check a stool sample and may recommend some lab work, a dietary change, and/or antibiotics.    I hope this helps. My 7-week pregnant cat has diarrhea and vomiting, is this normal?

Decreased appetite is normal in the later stages of pregnancy. So no worries there, as long as she is eating portions of her food. Loose stool can also occur, but should return to normal after a few days, and she should still have normal energy level and not hide. Hiding in cats, when they typically are social cats, is usually an indicator that something is wrong. I would see how she does in the next day or two, and if the diarrhea does not resolve, then have her stools checked by your vet. She may have intestinal parasites, or it could be loose due to stress from the pregnancy. I hope that Mia's stools return to normal soon. Best of luck moving forward and take care. : )

Is it normal for a mother cat to leak poop after giving birth?

That is not normal. She probably had a difficult birthing and there was a lot of pressure on the nerves controlling the anal tone and GI motility. With time the nerves that were damaged should recover and I would expect the fecal incontinence to improve. Other than time there is not much else to do. My cat had kittens, now she's vomiting, has diarrhea, won't eat. What's wrong?

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am afraid it sounds as if Jewel has picked up an infection, or she is just worn out from nursing & cleaning up after the kittens. I would not let her nurse the kittens, to decrease contamination if this is contagious, & to prevent a further drain on her resources. It would be best to have her seen by your veterinarian, not only to start treatment for her, if necessary, but to hopefully prevent the kittens from becoming ill. Cats can not go very long before they become even sicker. 3 days without food, & she could be in trouble. The kittens are old enough to eat on their own. Encourage them to do so until you see how Jewel is faring. I hope she is feeling better soon. Take care.
