My dog is vomiting blood on new thyroid meds. Is it an emergency?

Yes, that is possible, but i think it is more likely that the signs you described are due to a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the intestine, very commonly dietary related. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. I it may be a reaction to the medication or there could have been something else alreadybtherr that just didn’t show it self yet such as an infection. If you are displeased with your vet then you can seek a second opinion but i would give the vet a call or schedule a recheck to see if they want to change medications or do blood work to address the vomiting now. Since there is blood in the vomit I would recommend getting him rechecked to make sure it does not continue and he doesn’t get dehydrated from it

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I highly recommend that you have Tack evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Sometimes blood in the vomit can be seen with things like gastrointestinal ulceration which can occur secondary to medications, especially prednisone which is a commonly used medication for allergies. If this seems like a possibility, they would start her on medications for an ulcer. Good luck! I am keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!

I agree that it looks like blood. Vomiting blood is always significant and Tycho needs to see his veterinarian today. Vomiting blood can be a sign of rat poisoning, autoimmune condition, severe stomach ulcer, intestinal blockage or liver disease And other causes are also possible. Hello, and thank you for your question. Vomiting blood is considered an emergency and should be addressed by a vet as soon as possible. Possible reasons include a gastric ulcer, toxin ingestion, a bleeding mass in the stomach, or a foreign body causing trauma to the stomach lining. The vet can perform a full physical exam, assess for anemia, and may suggest x-rays, ultrasound and/or blood work to determine the underlying cause. At minimum, they can prescribe supportive medications to help reduce any further bleeding, and minimize vomiting. In the meantime, I would remove any access to food for the next few hours, as any further food ingestion may cause further vomiting. I hope this helps, and that Ziggy starts to feel better soon.

When there is evidence of blood in the vomit, that raises concern for things like a gastrointestinal ulcer, gastrointestinal tumor, severe gastroenteritis, foreign body ingestion, among other possibilities. Some tests that are usually run include bloodwork (CBC and chemistry panel +/- coagulation profile) and abdominal ultrasound. Thoracic/cervical radiographs may follow. Further diagnostics will be based on the findings up to that point. Treatment will be based on findings. I do think that this warrants an evaluation as soon as possible as he may be getting dehydrated. Keeping my fingers crossed that everything will be fine with Osito!

I would continue at the dose of 1 tablet every 12 hours and taper off as prescribed by your vet. This medication may not be the cause of the vomiting, though, and if it continues tomorrow I would take Patsy to the vet for a recheck. Sometimes vomiting can cause irritation to the esophagus and you may see a tiny amount of blood. However, if she continues vomiting and the amount of blood seems like it is getting bigger, she should see a vet immediately. You might take her food away for 12 hours to help with nausea, though she should be encouraged to drink water or pedialyte.
