My dog is vomiting blood on new thyroid meds. Is it an emergency?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | 8 years and 4 months old | 9.9 lbs

Hi. My dog is 8 and started thyroid meds 2 weeks ago. She is vomiting with specs of blood in it. The vet said at the follow up we will determine if the dose needs to be adjusted. My vet doesn't offer emergency services and I can only see her on Monday. The dog seems fine otherwise. She said not to skip a dose, so should I just continue with meds until tomorrow even if my dog is getting ill from the meds? Her diet is ROyal Canin small 8+. She has no other health conditions.

Hi there! Thanks for letting us take care of you today! This is unlikely to be due to the thyroid medication. When there is evidence of blood in the vomit, that raises concern for things like a gastrointestinal ulcer, gastrointestinal tumor, severe gastroenteritis, foreign body ingestion, among other possibilities.

Some tests that are usually run include bloodwork (CBC and chemistry panel +/- coagulation profile) and abdominal ultrasound. Thoracic/cervical/ abdominal adiographs may follow. Further diagnostics will be based on the findings up to that point. Keeping my fingers crossed that everything will be fine with Tiekie!
