My dog on Levothyroxine has bloody loose stools. Is it her thyroid?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 9 months old | 83 lbs

Maddi was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism on Tuesday and put on Levothyroxine. Today she had loose stools, and I noticed there was some blood in them, including one or two blood clots. I’ve looked online and quite a few people say this could happen with hormonal imbalances in dogs. Could her stool issues be because her thyroid hormones are starting to level out again?

Yes, that is possible, but i think it is more likely that the signs you described are due to a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the intestine, very commonly dietary related.
As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days.
I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
