My dog is still sick and vomiting after stopping Cephalexin. What now?

Poor Gabrielle! I recommend giving the cephalexin with food to help minimize the risk of vomiting. I also recommend you let your vet know that Gabrielle vomited, as they may recommend adding a probiotic to her food to help reduce the risk of gastrointestinal upset. They may also recommend a different diet while she's on the cephalexin, or changing the medication if the vomiting continues. I hope she feels better soon!

Usually cephalexin is well tolerated by dogs, but it can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. This can be alleviated by giving Molly her medication with food, but to be safe, I'd give your vet a call to let them know she is having these side effects. It is very likely she is having an adverse reaction to the Cephalexin. This is sometimes seen in pets that are sensitive to this medictaion. Notify your vet and then get her symptoms treated with medications prescribed by your vet. She will then need to go on a different class of antibiotic to treat her current condition and hopefully she will tolerate that one better. For now, its best to offer her small amounts of boiled plain chicken or lean ground turkey and rice to try and entice her to eat a little until you can get her seen by your vet for further care. Hi there, he may be having some gastric upset due to the antibiotics, but I would encourage you to call your vet to see if you could maybe stop the diclofenac and finish the cephalexin. If you are not giving your medications with a meal they can cause gastric upset even more, as they will increase gastric acid production. Pepcid (famotidine) is usually considered safe to use in dogs-you will have to call your doctor for a dosage or find it online as we cannot legally give you a dosage due to the nature of our company and having not seen your pet in person. However-and blood in the stool (I am assuming this is digested blood in your black feces) and not being able to eat without vomiting to me represents something I would personally encourage you to seek emergency veterinary care for. Vomiting can be caused by many different conditions including gastritis (upset stomach from eating something like garbage, raw food, bones, or dead animals in the park, etc.), pancreatitis, obstructions in the gut, as well as kidney/liver/metabolic diseases. Very often amoxicillin will do nothing to help the vomiting, and can make it worse as antiboitics are hard on the guts. I recommend feeding a bland diet of boiled/boneless/skinless chicken breast and boiled rice in small frequent meals (4-6 meals a day of 1/2 cup size meals). If the vomiting continues, or if Mui is lethargic or weak, then I would see a vet right away. If the vomiting stops and she is eating and acting normally then she is likely OK. I would not give any amoxicillin. Best of luck with Mui.

I'm very sorry you are dealing with this. At this point, you should discuss quality of life issues with your veterinarian. Friday may be able to get an antibiotic injection that, hopefully, would not cause stomach upset. If your veterinarian is unavailable due to the holiday, consider a visit to the local veterinary ER. After an exam, the vet on staff could recommend a different antibiotic or an injection.

Poor Mac! I recommend to call his veterinarian who may ask to see him again or may recommend medications. It possible the antibiotic has upset his tummy but it’s also possible something else is going on. You can switch his diet to boiled white meat chicken and plain boiled white rice for the next few days. If he continues to be sick, he should see his veterinarian.
