My dog vomited after taking cephalexin for hot spots. What to do?

I would strongly recommend taking her right away back to your vet, antibiotics alone are definitely not enough when a dog is vomiting, she needs an injection to stop the vomiting to start with, otherwise no oral medications can be given. cephlaxin is also known for increasing vomiting, she needs a different antibiotic such as Metrogyl or Amoxicillin. i would also recommend a blood test at the very least.

Usually cephalexin is well tolerated by dogs, but it can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. This can be alleviated by giving Molly her medication with food, but to be safe, I'd give your vet a call to let them know she is having these side effects. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for Cleo. Typically antibiotics are not given to treat hot spots unless there is a secondary infection, treating them requires a steroid cream that is available by prescription only from the vet. I would take Cleo into the vet first thing Monday to have the hot spot treatment. In the meantime, you can give her an Epsom salt bath to see if that gives her temporary relief, and put an Ecollar on her to keep her from licking at it and making it worse. It is very likely she is having an adverse reaction to the Cephalexin. This is sometimes seen in pets that are sensitive to this medictaion. Notify your vet and then get her symptoms treated with medications prescribed by your vet. She will then need to go on a different class of antibiotic to treat her current condition and hopefully she will tolerate that one better. For now, its best to offer her small amounts of boiled plain chicken or lean ground turkey and rice to try and entice her to eat a little until you can get her seen by your vet for further care. At the high end of the dose of 60mg/kg for systemic infections, it would be approximately 436mg every 8 hours for that dose for a 16lb dog. A 500mg capsule will not likely cause any life threatening problems. You may see vomiting and diarrhea but this should resolve on its own. If you start to see neurological symptoms such as seizures or a wobbly gait, I would have a veterinarian examine KC. I hope this helps! Hi there, he may be having some gastric upset due to the antibiotics, but I would encourage you to call your vet to see if you could maybe stop the diclofenac and finish the cephalexin. If you are not giving your medications with a meal they can cause gastric upset even more, as they will increase gastric acid production. Pepcid (famotidine) is usually considered safe to use in dogs-you will have to call your doctor for a dosage or find it online as we cannot legally give you a dosage due to the nature of our company and having not seen your pet in person. However-and blood in the stool (I am assuming this is digested blood in your black feces) and not being able to eat without vomiting to me represents something I would personally encourage you to seek emergency veterinary care for. Most of the side effects have to do with intestinal signs - mild nausea, diarrhea, or decreased appetite - all of these can be causing Chicharito to be a little bit less active. In rare cases, cephalexin can cause kidney damage, but this is in dogs who already have kidney disease.
