Why is my puppy throwing up after a steroid shot for allergies?

Poor pup! I recommend to have him examined again today. It’s possible the liquid Benadryl is making him throw up. The doctor may recommend to try a tablet instead. The doctor may also want to send him home with some oral steroids and perhaps a medication to stop vomiting. A bland diet for the next 24 hours may also be beneficial. I hope Kai starts feeling better quickly!

Poor guy. Steroids can cause abnormal stools, so this is likely the culprit. Also his body is stressed, so loose stool is commonly seen. You can try giving him a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese for a few days, then slowly transition him back to his normal diet once his stools do return to normal. 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) can also be added to his food daily to help solidify his stools. If he still has loose stools after 48 hrs, then a repeat vet visit is likely needed to get him on something stronger. You should continue to give the Benadryl as instructed by your vet. I am sorry to hear about your pup! I would recommend calling your vet to find out if the symptoms he is showing could be related to the injections. You don't mention what injections were given, but some (such as Cytopoint) can have transient vomiting/diarrhea/lethargy as a result which usually resolves in a few days but your vet may want to investigate further or prescribe medication to treat these symptoms.

Steroids can cause GI ulceration and this is a potential concern for dogs on steroids like dexamethasone. The bloody stool could also be due to some other cause. I would recommend a recheck with your veterinarian to determine the cause and consider whether or not an allergy drug like Apoquel might be more appropriate to treat GG's allergies.

When the vomiting does not stop and there is nothing left in the stomach to throw up except bile (a yellow fluid). It is important you take your pet to a veterinarian in these types of cases to get some relief, the vet can give her anti emetic to help stop the vomiting). gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting and diarrhea can be side effects of Apoquel . Also changes in prednisone dose (if there were any?) can have an effect as it is a drug that should not stop abruptly and the tapering of the dose needs to be very slow. The adrenal gland makes natural steroids, when we give steroid medicine this can suppress the adrenal gland releasing natural steroids. It takes a while for this suppression to happen, but it is certainly possible with prolonged use of higher dose steroids. The dog is okay until the steroid medication stops, then it has a steroid deficiency which leads to fatigue, sickness amongst many signs. The adrenal gland isn't damaged in this case, just suppressed. Nevertheless it can make a dog very ill, it is known as secondary adrenal insufficiency. Usually this is avoided by slowly tapering a dog off steroid medication so the gland starts functioning properly again. This is certainly something to bear in mind, but I would be more inclined to go down the route of gastroenteritis first. Don't hesitate to go to the vet with Bodie if the vomiting is not settling down. If you feel there is little improvement you can certainly mention adrenal insufficiency. Best of luck!

Unless the veterinarian administered an immunosuppressive dose of dexamethasone, it should not interfere with the immune response for the vaccinations that were administered. The dose that we give for preventing an allergic reaction is lower than the dose given to suppress the immune system. I hope this helps!
