My dog ate too much peanut butter and is throwing up. Vet needed?

I accidentally gave my 10 month old Pomeranian dog some peanut butter and he ate too much and now he puked four times already should I take him to the vet or stop giving him food until he feels better?

Poor little guy! Before doing anything else, check the ingredient list on your peanut butter to check for xylitol. Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs, causing sudden drops in blood sugar that can lead to seizures, liver failure, and even death in severe cases. If xylitol is listed on the ingredients, take your dog to an ER vet immediately.

However, if xylitol is not a concern, it certainly sounds as if your puppy has some stomach upset. This could be a result of gastroenteritis from eating too much of a fatty food, or he may be developing pancreatitis. Definitely stop feeding him for the next 12-24 hours. When you begin feeding him again, offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for the next few days before slowly transitioning back to his normal diet. If he continues vomiting today, he should be seen by a vet to assess his hydration and administer supportive care (fluids, anti-nausea medication, etc.). I hope he feels better soon!

It could be this new treat has upset Harley's stomach. I can give you a home remedy for him to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. As long as Scooby doesn’t have any medical conditions like pancreatitis I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Peanut butter without xylitol is not toxic, and although the one episode of vomiting may be related or you may see diarrhea it should be self limiting. If Scooby continues to vomit however you should see your vet.

Poor Blue! Small breed young puppies are delicate and they are extremely prone to low blood sugar if they don’t eat well. This condition can be fatal. There are many causes for vomiting including worms, change in diet, bacteria over growth and Parvo. I recommend to have Blue seen today by his veterinarian. It’s very important to get these little puppies eating and not vomiting to avoid low blood sugar. The doctor will need to run some tests to determine the cause. Offer him boiled white meat chicken and boiled white rice. This is a bland diet which can help to settle his stomach. Smaller, more frequent meals are better than two large ones. My dog ate a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. Do I need to induce vomiting?

I certainly wouldn't worry about inducing vomiting after just one peanut butter cup. The induction of vomiting poses more risks than the peanut butter cup does! Inducing vomiting at home with hydrogen peroxide comes with the risk of aspiration and significant irritation to the esophagus and stomach. The wrapper will pass without a problem. There isn't enough chocolate in a peanut butter cup to cause any toxicity concerns. Worst case scenario, Jack may develop an upset stomach with a bit of vomiting and diarrhea. If he does, you can offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days before gradually transitioning back to his normal food. Puppy ate too much, now throwing up yellow and can't keep food down.

Marley is probably suffering from gastritis and an over distention of his stomach from eating some much food all at once. The stomach lining is probably very irritated and is making him vomit up anything else he eats or drinks. I would recommend withholding food for about 12 to 24 hours. If he does not vomit during that time then you can start to re-introduce a bland diet, like plain boiled chicken and rice, and see if he can keep that down. If he is not able to stop vomiting, becomes lethargic, or has diarrhea you will need to take him to the vet to be examined. Small puppies like this can get dehydrated rapidly and he may need fluids support and medication to help stop the vomiting. I hope this helps. Not eating and vomiting can be due to a very upset stomach/gastritis, pancreatitis, severe diabetic crisis, blockages of the gut, organ disease, etc. It is important to stop the vomiting and rule out surgical causes and organ failure causes. Vomiting, drooling and inappetence can be observed with conditions such as gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction, among other possibilities. For this reason, I highly recommend that you have Peanut evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible as I am afraid she is likely becoming dehydrated.
