My dog ate peanut butter (no xylitol) and is lethargic. Is he okay?

Poor little guy! Before doing anything else, check the ingredient list on your peanut butter to check for xylitol. Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs, causing sudden drops in blood sugar that can lead to seizures, liver failure, and even death in severe cases. If xylitol is listed on the ingredients, take your dog to an ER vet immediately. However, if xylitol is not a concern, it certainly sounds as if your puppy has some stomach upset. This could be a result of gastroenteritis from eating too much of a fatty food, or he may be developing pancreatitis. Definitely stop feeding him for the next 12-24 hours. When you begin feeding him again, offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for the next few days before slowly transitioning back to his normal diet. If he continues vomiting today, he should be seen by a vet to assess his hydration and administer supportive care (fluids, anti-nausea medication, etc.). I hope he feels better soon!

The good news is there are no ingredients that are toxic, so you don't have to do anything for him. As long as there is no xylitol, the worst you may see is some minor stomach upset (vomiting or diarrhea). As long as Charlie is behaving normally, you should be fine. Minor stomach upset can typically be managed at home with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to the regular diet afterwards. Symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian may include: persistent or worsening stomach upset, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or lethargy.

Hello. I am so glad you checked to make sure the peanut butter did not contain any xylitol. Xylitol can cause a dog's blood sugar to drop dangerously low, so it is important to avoid this. Too much PB for Chewy has the same risk as too much PB for us. It will make you fat. So, try to place no more than a teaspoon in the ball, & not a heaping teaspoon & do this only once a day. Xylitol would be clearly labeled on the Ingredients label. I do not see xylitol on this label. I just cannot see the rest of the jar, so if it doesn't have xylitol written on it, it should be safe for Hachi. Typically the natural peanut butters are the one that contain the xylitol in it.
