Are vegetables included in my dog's 10% rule for treats and extras?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Do vegetables count towards the 10% rule of extras in my dogs diet? Or can they be added in for "free"? My dogs supplements and treats make up 10% of her diet currently but Would it unlance the diet if I added in an 1/8 cup of peas at each meal? if I included the peas it would be 18% of her diet coming from things other than her dog food. Is this ok since vegetables are nutrient rich foods? Thanks! Can you explain why if it's not ok?

Theoretically, it won't hurt her but you are increasing caloric intake. If the increased intake is not burned off, weight gain may occur. I think adding vegetables is a good idea. Perhaps you could decrease the amount of treats to account for the addition of the vegetables which would probably be better for her.
