Is adding more veggies to my dog's diet too much with pumpkin?

I typically recommend one tablespoon of pumpkin for each meal, so it's given twice a day. It's fine, however, to give it to her once a day with two tablespoons, but I would not add any more to her diet. Too much fiber can cause constipation, so it's best to stick with a maximum of two tablespoons today.

Pumpkin is good because it adds fiber to the diet leading to regular defecation, and when a dog has regular stools, that helps express the anal sacs. In fact, pumpkin is recommended to give to dogs when they are constipated. For her digestive health and anal sacs, pumpkin would be the best to give her, but as a treat, you can switch out to another tablespoon of veggies every now and then :-)

Theoretically, it won't hurt her but you are increasing caloric intake. If the increased intake is not burned off, weight gain may occur. I think adding vegetables is a good idea. Perhaps you could decrease the amount of treats to account for the addition of the vegetables which would probably be better for her.

It really depends on why you're given them. If Bella is on a well balanced quality dog food AND an ideal weight, she should be getting about 700 calories a day and no more than 10% (70 calories) should be coming from treats. So the cup amount would depend on the food (70 calories = 3/4 cup blueberries or pumpkin puree, or a little over a cup of cubed apples). Yes! You can certainly do that! Good question! For her weight she would need about 390 calories per day. If you cut her food to 1/2 cup that would equal approximately 220.5 calories. Then you would have about 170 calories left over for the veggies and pumpkin. Be sure to count in any other treats/food you give her. It doesn't take much to add on a lot of extra calories to a 17# dog! The other option is to switch her to a "light" or "senior" formula dog food that has less calories per cup. You may want to add some kibble (dry complete dog food) to make up the remaining 60-70% of her ration. I do not think mashing up the vegetables will make a difference. Pate canned food has the same digestibility as any other good quality food. 10 to 15% extras in form of treats is ok provided you only feed 85 to 90% of dog food, ie , your total should be 100% of her daily ration . You can give her boiled carrots/ carrot pieces or green beans as treats.

What healthy treats to give your pup, good job! I would rotate between the greens and pumpkin, and the fruit at night. Keep in mind that too much fiber can make your dog constipated, so it's best to avoid giving her too much :-)
