Does food added to my dog's kibble count as diet or 10% treats?

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 7 years and 2 months old | 17 lbs

If I’m adding 1/2 cup to my dogs food every day to her kibble, will I count that towards the 10% of extras in her diet or do I count that as part of her diet? please explain, thank you!

If you are adding 1/2 cup of food to her diet then that counts towards her diet. Treats should only be less than 10% of the dogs diet b/c they are generally higher in calories. Also considering Chloe's age, I would recommend getting her on a senior diet if not done so already.

You don't have to give Chloe any veggies. You can give them as an occasional snack, but her kibble will provide all the nutrients she needs to be healthy. I would cut back in the veggies and give her slightly more kibble :-)

Hello. It sounds like you are giving her a good diet and the plan you have outlined looks like a nice balanced diet. I would just confirm that the diet you are feeding (the kibble) is a good diet that is high in fibre and low in fat for Chloe. Ask your vet what they recommend in the area you are in, but it sounds like you are doing a good job!

You may want to add some kibble (dry complete dog food) to make up the remaining 60-70% of her ration. I do not think mashing up the vegetables will make a difference. Pate canned food has the same digestibility as any other good quality food. 10 to 15% extras in form of treats is ok provided you only feed 85 to 90% of dog food, ie , your total should be 100% of her daily ration . You can give her boiled carrots/ carrot pieces or green beans as treats.

My dog gained weight. Can I safely cut her food and add veggies?

Yes! You can certainly do that! Good question! For her weight she would need about 390 calories per day. If you cut her food to 1/2 cup that would equal approximately 220.5 calories. Then you would have about 170 calories left over for the veggies and pumpkin. Be sure to count in any other treats/food you give her. It doesn't take much to add on a lot of extra calories to a 17# dog! The other option is to switch her to a "light" or "senior" formula dog food that has less calories per cup. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Chloe is super cute! From your pictures she doesn't look overweight but I understand your concerns. I would recommend 315 calories total per day, which is about what you are giving her (~311). You can increase activity, cut back a bit on treats or change to a low calorie formula with in the brand you are currently feeding. I hope this helps!

Are vegetables included in my dog's 10% rule for treats and extras?

Theoretically, it won't hurt her but you are increasing caloric intake. If the increased intake is not burned off, weight gain may occur. I think adding vegetables is a good idea. Perhaps you could decrease the amount of treats to account for the addition of the vegetables which would probably be better for her.

Hello, thank you for your question about Loki. Congratulations on being a new puppy owner! You are correct in that most veterinarians say that puppies (and adult dogs) should not receive more than 10% of their daily calories from treats. What that means is that you should 90% of Loki's calories from his puppy food and 10% from treats. Ultimately in a young growing puppy like Loki, if you feed 100% puppy food and an extra 10% from treats, it should be just fine since he has higher calorie needs while he's growing. What's most important and the reason most veterinarians make this recommendation is to ensure that we don't give TOO many treats to dogs as these often have many calories and can make animals prone to obesity.
