Do dog supplements like fish oil count in the 10% treat rule?

No more than 10% of the dog's total daily calories should come from treats. Those two biscuits equal around 7% perfect of her daily calories, which is perfect! It's fine that 15% of her diet is the supplements, treats, and chews, keep up the good work!

There is more to compiling a balanced diet than counting the total calories and generally treats should be just occasional offerings as they seldom contain a balance of nutrients. It would be advisable to contact a specialist nutritionist, especially if the supplements have been prescribed for a particular health condition. A good quality, balanced diet should not need to be excessively supplemented

If you are adding 1/2 cup of food to her diet then that counts towards her diet. Treats should only be less than 10% of the dogs diet b/c they are generally higher in calories. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! I do not recommend adding a calcium supplement to puppy food it can affect bone growth significantly in a puppy. I recommend stopping that immediately unless directed by your Vet. As for the fish oil, that is fine but how often depends on the brand you are using. Theoretically, it won't hurt her but you are increasing caloric intake. If the increased intake is not burned off, weight gain may occur. I think adding vegetables is a good idea. Perhaps you could decrease the amount of treats to account for the addition of the vegetables which would probably be better for her.

Think of it this way - treats are like cookies - they taste good and may have some nutritional value, but overall are empty calories. Dog treats are similar. You can use smaller treats, or training treats to be able to give her a treat more frequently, but no more than 10% (or less) of her diet needs to be treats. You are correct in that most veterinarians say that puppies (and adult dogs) should not receive more than 10% of their daily calories from treats. What that means is that you should 90% of Loki's calories from his puppy food and 10% from treats. Ultimately in a young growing puppy like Loki, if you feed 100% puppy food and an extra 10% from treats, it should be just fine since he has higher calorie needs while he's growing. What's most important and the reason most veterinarians make this recommendation is to ensure that we don't give TOO many treats to dogs as these often have many calories and can make animals prone to obesity.
