Urine is mostly water and urea which is a waste product of protein breakdown. Urea can develop into ammonia NH3 > NH4 which is why your cat litter smells like ammonia. You should empty out the litter completely more frequently (less deep litter with frequent cleaning is preferable for your cat). If your cat is older you should consider taking her in for blood testing to check her kidney function. There is a new test called SDMA which can detect early kidney disease.

Your kitty may be suffering from diabetes, kidney disease or liver disease ur a urinary tract problem. Please take him to a veterinarian for an exam. The vet will need to do blood tests which will point out where the problem lies. He will also do a urinalysis. Depending on the underlying problem, Cougar will need to take Antibiotics and receive fluids if dehydrated.

Dehydration (causing the urine to be even more concentrated than normal), infection, diabetes, and kidney failure would all change the smell of Stormy's urine. I would recommend a vet visit for a full blood work and urine panel to see if any medical cause can be found.

It may be the litter you are using that is reacting to your cats urine smell. However you should always scrape the bottom of the litterbox to ensure you get all the urine out of the box. When filling the litterbox you are usually ok with filling it to 3-4 inches of litter. Also, if your cats are tolerant to it, you can put in litter liners that will coat the bottom of the litterbox and prevent any sticking at the bottom. My senior cat's urine smells sweet or has no odor. Should I worry?

Older cats have a tendency to have problems with their kidneys as they get older. This can result in their kidneys not concentrating their urine as well, so it is more dilute and has less (or no) odor to it. Kidney disease can cause a number of problems, so I would recommend having your veterinarian evaluate Lilly and check a urine sample and blood work. Having more dilute urine can also predispose older cats to urinary tract infections, that will will be important to check for as well. If you have one available in your area, you might consider having a house call vet come to the house if Lilly does not do well going to the vet. Why does my unneutered male cat have yellow stool and ammonia smell?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The strong ammonia smell is likely due to the urine being concentrated (not diluted by water intake). Male cat urine also has a special "scent" for marking. Neutering will help with this. The yellow stool will require a fecal from your veterinarian to check for parasites. Hope this helps!

Why is my cat peeing clear, odorless liquid that looks like water?

As you likely know, cats normally have very concentrated urine which has a very strong smell to it. If Tommy's urine does not have an odor to it, it might be because his urine is no longer as concentrated as normal. (Urine can actually look and smell like water if it is not concentrated.) I would strongly recommend having your veterinarian check Tommy's urine to make sure that it is normal. Why is my kitten's urine dark and smelly? Could it be a UTI?

The longer he holds his urine the darker in color and stronger odor it can have. Also if he dehydrated it has potential to make the urine a little darker. Since he has issues with a litter box, I would have his urine checked for a UTI or crystals to see if that is complicating the situation and causing some of these problems. You can also add canned food to make sure he is getting plenty of fluids

Why does my cat's urine smell strongly of garlic? Should I worry?

There is nothing necessarily that should make your cat's urine smell like garlic, but it may be possible that Butter's urine is just much more concentrated than your other cats. I would ensure that she is drinking enough water and not dehydrated, as dehydration leads to concentrated, very smelly urine. If she seems to be drinking a comparable amount to your other cats, I would not be worried. If she is acting abnormal in any other ways, I recommend having her seen by your veterinarian for an exam and a urinalysis. Your vet can test the urine for any abnormal chemicals such as sugar or ketones, or test for infection, that may cause it to smell different from your other cats. I hope this is helpful!
