My Shih Tzu is pooping less, has hard, dry stool. Is this normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 7 years and 10 months old | 12 lbs

My Shih Tzu Romeo normally poops 2 to 3 times a day. He eats twice a day. He only has pooped once a day for past three days. Is that considered normal? Also his stool was in log like shape today but it was hard and kinda dry. He didn’t drink much water yesterday. I was concerned about Obstipation. The vet gave me Lactulose before and told me to try that when he’s consipated. He is eating good and playful. Should I be concerned? Thank you

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Romeo. Constipation is an extreme form of constipation. This occurs when the dog is not able to pass any feces at all. Based on your description, this does not currently seem to be his problem. However, you do not want this to occur. Feeding more moisture such as canned food or warm water over the dry kibble can help to soften stool. You can try a low dose of his lactulose, but beware that it can cause diarrhea. My dog poops less on low-fat food. Is this normal after illness?

If he's eating less fiber/volume or has had a change in diet while healing, it can be normal to see a reduction (or increase) in stool size, volume, or frequency. As long as he seems to be going normally when he does go, and doesn't seem in distress, I would just keep an eye on him. If the stool becomes bloody, is frequently diarrhea, Romeo has a sore or tender abdomen, or he seems to be having other symptoms in addition, a recheck with your vet is best.

My dog is constipated with hard, pebble-like poop. What can I do?

It’s possible Bruno’s food does not contain enough fiber or moisture to meet the needs of his body. I recommend a diet called Royal Canin. It is a low residue, highly digestible food and most pets who eat this diet have great stool quality. It comes in canned and dried and even has a breed-specific Chihuahua diet. I recommend to switch him to this food over 5 to 7 days and see how his body responds best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

My dog poops less after Trazodone. Is this normal or constipation?

As long as Romeo is eating well, not vomiting and his energy level is high, there is nothing to worry about. Trazadone can produce gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, increased appetite but it is not known to cause less frequent defecation or constipation in dogs.

My dog eats wet food. Is it normal he's not drinking much water?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Romeo. Wet food has a very high moisture content. So dogs eating this type of food drink less water than when eating kibble. If he is exercising less, this will cause him to drink less as well. As long as he is eating and acting normal, then you do not likely need to be concerned. You can always follow up with his veterinarian, but I suspect he is fine. I hope this information helps!
