My dog has upset stomach, is gassy, eating grass. Can I give Tums?

While we do not typically recommend Tums for dogs, you can safely give him some Prilosec (omeprazole), to help reduce acid secretion in the stomach and help him feel better. Prilosec generally comes in 20 mg tablets, so he could receive 40 mg orally twice daily. If the clinical signs persist beyond a day or so after trying the Prilosec, I recommend that he be seen by your veterinarian again, as a more serious problem could be present. Tums is not likely to help with the diarrhea. His problem is not the stomach, it is the colon (large intestines). I suggest you use Pepto Bismol instead but please refer to these guidelines: ( https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/pepto-bismol/ )\ A 70 pound dog would need 7ml - a teaspoon is 5ml - so I would give 1.5 teaspoons. If the diarrhea persists for more than 24 hours (despite the Pepto) then you need to get him to a vet for an exam. Also, if is not eating or feeling otherwise unwell he should see a vet.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! We do use Tum for certain conditions in dogs. Rarely for tummy upset, usually for low calcium. The most common antacid used in animals is pepcid (famotidine). The medication and dosing has to be prescribed by a Vet that has examined your dog. I hope this helps1

Hello, I am so sorry for your concerns about Abu. Gas distension in the gut can be very uncomfortable at the least, & sometimes very painful. If you have some simethicone ( Gas-X ), you can give him about 50mg, & then no food for a minimum of 6-12 hours. Water is OK. The Simethicone can be repeated in 6 hours if necessary. Watch for any progression of signs, such as retching/vomiting, or noticeable abdominal bloating. Your pup may also be getting ready to develop diarrhea. If any of these develop, or he just does not seem to be improving, please see your veterinarian as soon as you can. I hope all is well soon. Take care.

You can give him some gas drops to see if that helps. You can actually use the Children's Gas Drops like this one: https://www.target.com/p/little-remedies-gas-relief-digestive-health-treatments-1-fl-oz/-/A-77594295 He can have 0.6mls by mouth (to the 2nd line of the dropper) up to every 6 hours as needed. If you have to give it for more than 2 days I would be a bit worried and at that stage he should see a vet. Hope this helps. Some dogs acquire a taste for grass and will chew it for no reason. However, it could be a sign of an underlying problem as well. I would suggest you give him an antacid tablet once per day every day for about a week or two to see if it helps. I assume you can get Famotidine in Bulgaria at your local pharmacy? He can have 10mg once a day. I would give it on an empty stomach and then wait 30 to 40 minutes and then offer his food. I would try this first to see what happens.

A better choice for an antacid would be Pepcid. You can discuss it and get a dose based on Bella's weight from your veterinarian.
