My Dachshund can't walk, falls, and has a hunch back. What's wrong?

Dachshunds are notorious for hurting their backs due their conformation. They have very long backs compared to other breeds. This makes them more susceptible to injury. They will often walked hunched and scream when picked up. Usually these dogs need strong pain medications, anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxers. These back issues can become serious as they can herniate a disc and end up paralyzed. Minnie really needs to see a vet for this issue. I hope this helps. Best wishes to you and Minnie!

I recommend that you have Sprinkles evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Sprinkles feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. The first thing I think of in Sadie's breed with symptoms of not wanting to move, crying when picked up and unwilling to jump up is neck or back pain. Neck or back pain in dogs can be from a strain or sprain or from IVDD (intervertebral disk disease) which is common in long bodied, short legged dogs. I'd have Sadie see today by your Vet since she is in pain. They can diagnose neck or back pain on physical exam. As long as she is moving her legs normally (not dragging a leg or walking drunk) they likely will start an anti-inflammatory, pain medications and possibly a muscle relaxant. Rest is required for 4-6 weeks, this means no running, jumping or stairs. She will feel better before her body is fully healed. I hope this helps and I wish Sadie a speedy recovery!

Poor Sadie! Hip problems can be common in large breed dogs like GSDs, and that may be causing the issue with her back leg. It could also be there is a problem with her spine leading to nerve damage to the leg. She really does have to see a vet for this problem, and I would take her into one today. Vets are trained to deal with aggressive dogs.

Bella needs to see the veterinarian today. Signs like this are never normal and can indicate many things. Especially being a Dachshund, there is a concern she has injured her back, has a compressed disc or has a protruding disc. Other causes are also possible. Injuries to the back can become serious quickly and can lead to paralysis. A physical exam and radiographs needed to begin figuring out the cause and the best treatment.
